Follows young Hasidic Jews aged 18 – 25 in Montreal, New York and Jerusalem who decide they can no longer live in their ultra orthodox communities, so they venture into the secular world. To do so they have to turn their backs on their relationships with their parents and their siblings.
A film about spiritual journeys in the opposite direction; from the certainties/constraints of religious fundamentalism to the uncertainties of personal freedom.

Compass in general is a superb weekly religious affairs program, and their archive is downloadable. It is one of the joys of intelligent public funded (read communist) television we have a wealth of downunder.

In one way, they cease to exist, and in another way, they start to exist. They all stressed finally being to live for/as oneself and not just to obey an endless series of rules. Even though I married a non-Jew and am myself an atheist (and my brother is aware of this), he hasn't turned his back on me. And that father of the Montreal family still kept hoping. Excommunication from a family is very difficult....

It's a pretty major thing to do - they effectively cease to exist by leaving.

Just watched it--pretty interesting. Funny how they didn't seem to be rebelling against belief in the supernatural so much as the rules of hasidism.

I'll have to check this out. My brother is a hasidic rabbi with 8 kids, and I'm always hoping one or two will stray....of course, I don't know what I'll do about it.

Thanks for the link. I've bookmarked it, and will have a look later, when I have more time.
