Jesus? Is that you? (Can anyone explain what this REALLY is?)

I just had an amazing experience!

I was standing in my bedroom, about to go to bed, and I had just set my alarm clock. All the nights in the house were off and everything was dark. I had an itch so I closed my eyes tight and started to rub them. BAM! I saw a glaring bright white light, like polished gold, in the form of three large circles, one in the center of my vision with two copies on either side (possibly in the form of a double helix?) all of equal size, made up of many smaller circles, which were also made up of smaller circles of light; and behind those three bright circles made of circles made of circles was a light yellow background with many dark spots and light spots inter-mixed. Even though I knew this could only be in my mind the light seemed to burn. My eyes felt as though they were watering. I wasn’t even rubbing very hard.

After I opened my eyes the image remained for a few seconds, sort of like the way your vision turns to static when you have a faint attack, only instead of darkness I was seeing a bright light. I also didn’t feel dizzy or lightheaded. It was incredible! But what the hell was it?

It's not unusual for me to see colorful shapes and patterns when I close my eyes tightly. Usually it happens after I’ve just looked at a light source or when I’ve been staring at something for a long time. I remember when I was a kid playing with ants in the back yard (No, I wasn’t burning them. I was studying them!) after I came back inside I could close my eyes and see lots of little purple-red ants walking across my field of vision, a residual image I assumed. The strange thing about this experience is that the whole house was dark when it happened so it couldn’t have been caused by a light.

I think these lights are like floaters. Almost everyone has experianced them, but nobody talks about them unless they're discussing an optical illusion. I've seen some optical illusions that cause a picture to appear on a blank wall or sheet of paper using the same principal.

I never thought about where they come from before. Then again, I’ve never experienced them so intensely either! Do these lights have a name? What causes them? Does anyone know what I’m talking about?

PS – I’m pretty sure it wasn’t Jesus. It was probably Xenu.

When I was a kid I used to 'phosphenate' in my bed, by exerting light pressure on my closed eyes. I could draw 'phosphene animals' or geometric figures that way. One of my favorites was Mickey Mouse's head.

Thanks Kristy! The human body is so cool. =D

Well, I only said they could be phosphenes - then again, they might be actual fairy dust.

I have those all the time too... except they're not visual, they're sexual. Okay, just joking. (Way cool Kristy, I didn't know they were called phosphenes! Thanks for that.)

I agree, it was probably Jesus or you may have crossed briefly into the path of a train on the Astral Plane. An unlikely and improbable suggestion is that you experienced a pressure phosphene - here's everything you everything wanted to know about phosphenes but were afraid to ask.*
