It's been 1984 for the last 8 years!

I know - I'm the last person on Atheist Nexus to see the similarities between Oceania and our current administration:

The Ministry of Love Tortures people just like Guantanamo;
The Ministry of Peace runs the never-ending war that we are always just about to win - just like Iraq;
The Ministry of Plenty controls the diminishing quality of our manufactured products and the crumbling quality of middle-class life;
The Ministry of Truth: What else would you call our media?
Big Brother and the right of our government to spy on us;

Was Oceania considered to be a socialist nation? Maybe communist? It's been 30 years since I read the book, so I guess I should get a copy and read it again.

Maybe we should have been asking all those people who fear a turn in the socialist direction if they'd rather be living in Oceania - It's coming up the pike if we stay with our current administration.

So, let's hope we don't end up with Animal Farm as the next chapter of American history!

And Orwell is far more prescient than people give him credit for. His contempt for Stalinism, often cited as the driver for Animal Farm, was the same contempt he had for Fascism.

"Left" "Right" is bullshit. There's only authority and no authority. You have the society you voted for. That is horrifying.

Using torture is the ultimate test. You cease to be civilised, you forfeit the moral high ground.

When Cheney, Rumsfeld et al. are hung out on gibbets for the crows to pick at, I will have a peaceful sleep.

Those people weren't there by accident. They are there by the complicity of the people.

If I continue, I'll only get more obnoxious. This thread really belongs in the Cynics.

The GWB administration has indeed used 1984 as an instruction manual to a large extent. Of course because of the Internet they can't have the level of control that was possible in the totalitarian society of the novel, but that doesn't mean they haven't tried to achieve the closest possible facsimile (with a few minor variations).

under such as system today everything would fall apart without changes to the theory use in the book such as those in researchers being allowed to have some free thought otherwise we become stagent and soon die away.
and i think it wont happen in the U.S at least not yet any further attempt would lead to social further kaos than before and if trend before the election race continue's to decline like it was it would eventally equal an overthrow of the system and a possiable reinstatement of a decomcatic U.S goverment that is more like the constitution
