Islamic Supreme Council issues Fatwah In Canada

I never thought I'd be Happy to hear about the issuing of a Fatwah but this is a good one :-)

The following Fatwah was issued by 19 Canadian and 1 American Imam(s) today:

"In our view, these attacks are evil, and Islam requires Muslims to stand up against this evil,"

The imams also said it is a duty of every Muslim in Canada and the U.S. to safeguard the two countries.

"They must expose any person, Muslim or non-Muslim, who would cause harm to fellow Canadians or Americans,"

This is only one small part of a very long Fatwah and the full text hasn't been published yet.

They've apparently decided that it's time to dissociate themselves with the Extremists and Terrorists in their midst publicly and in accordance with Islamic Law.

Every Canadian and American Muslim is required to follow this.

A group of Canadian and U.S. Islamic leaders on Friday issued a fatwa, or religious edict, declaring that an attack by extremists on the two countries would constitute an attack on the 10 million Muslims living in North America.

The 20 imams associated with the Islamic Supreme Council of Canada said this marked the first fatwa by the Muslim clergy declaring attacks on Canada and the U.S. as attacks on Muslims.

"In our view, these attacks are evil, and Islam requires Muslims to stand up against this evil," the imams said in their fatwa.

The imams also said it is a duty of every Muslim in Canada and the U.S. to safeguard the two countries.

"They must expose any person, Muslim or non-Muslim, who would cause harm to fellow Canadians or Americans," they said.

The 20 imams who signed the fatwa come from B.C., Alberta, Ontario, Quebec and Houston.

The fatwa comes just weeks after an attempted bombing on Christmas Day of a U.S. airliner bound for Detroit from Amsterdam.

Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, a 23-year-old Nigerian Muslim man, has been indicted on six charges, which include attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction and attempted murder.

This is cosmetic and little more. Anyone who thinks it will make any difference is kidding themselves. The various splinters of Islamist ideologies, and there are many, pay no regard to mainstream Islam or even Saudi trained wahhabist clergy. Each accuses the other of heresy and of teaching false islam. These people have no honour and are free to lie, deceive and mislead anyone not of their exact same splinter with quranic blessing. They blend in to existing muslim culture, usually undetectably. What is not stressed anywhere near enough is the number of muslims radicalised in Great Britain, underpants bomber is just the latest. None ofthem get discovered until it's too late. This fatwa is worthless.

In any case, who is this supposed to impress anyway ? Where were their fucking voices on 911 ? Too little to late. It's not a religion, it's a disease. I don't believe anything any muslim says. They'll get my tolerance when they have earned it. These baby steps haven't really brought them any closer.

Exactly. This is what I think is happening with the Fatwah.

It's an unequivocal warning to the extremists that Muslims are being instructed not to go along with them and to actively act against them.

Whether it will work or not, only time will tell but it's a good first step, IMO.

Moderate Muslims are always telling us that Islam does not encourage violence; well whether it does or not, we're not the people they need to convince. They need to somehow convey this message of a peace based Islam to the members of their own faith.

We're all skeptics here :-)

You may be right. I'm happy that the stand was taken.

I'll look forward to see what actually happens.

I don't really know how the Muslim religion works and whether the Elders of the Mosque can do that or not.

It's my understanding (which could be wrong) that a Fatwah cannot be overruled by anyone because it's officially Sharia Law.

It will be ignored by the extremists I agree and they will play the "traitor" card, etc.

But this is pretty serious for moderate Muslims to ignore and I believe that was the intent.

It legitimizes Muslims taking a stand against the extremists and gives them religious support in doing so.

That's significant IMO.
