I didn't think he was and that's why they used him for commercial use. If not, why can't he be a sign in atheist's chrissmiss'? I like Santa haha.

Yes he is. His mythology is rooted in St. Nicholas (I think from Russia, or Poland, or some place close to there). He morphed over the years into Santa Claus. I see that the Purply Oyster left some links to explore.

As far as being used for commercial use, religion is a commercial enterprise. Like cigarette companies, its goals is to recruit users and get them addicted for life, even though doing so is not in their best interest. There are a lot of similarities to commercialism, consumerism, and capitalism with modern xtianitiy. I've seen preachers on TV saying that people had money and property because God was blessing them. Never mind that crooks and murders have those same things, too.

Jesus and Santa, they're all just another company logo.
