Is rape more morally abhorrent than murder?

I've heard a lot of people say that they think rape is worse than murder. I'm not sure where I stand on this, but I have a few opinions that sway me either way.
1. You can have a good reason to kill someone, like they are trying to kill you, although this may not count a murder, since it was out of self defense.
2. There is never a good reason to rape someone.
3. After a rape, the victim is never fully healed. Rape victims often have flashbacks, memories long after the rape happened. They never can live their lives the same again, they are never the same person again.
I have some more, but I'd like to hear what others have to say.
Murder could be considered worse because once the person is dead, they are never coming back, but at least they don't suffer through life.

Well, I have at times thought that some rapists, along with murderers, should get the death penalty.

I don't try to weigh how bad they are. It's pretty black and white to me: Rape= bad, Murder=bad

It's not like cops go to a murder scene and say: "Well, atleast she wasn't raped!"

To compare rape and murder, we are only taking a person being raped or killed as only effected. There are others too who feel the effect. For example we don't know how lives are destoyed when bread earner of the faimly is killed. Children denied good education and thus suffer for whole of their lives. Our minds are perhaps unable to make full understanding of the damage. So it depends on the case that what is worse.

Put it a different way: Injuring someone and scarring their psyche is more morally abhorrent than murder.

This is a nauseating argument - any answer you choose to give is an unexploded bomb. The position that it is worse than murder was championed by Dworkin et al, amongst other interesting ideas eg. all penetrative sex is rape and the FBI pretends the snuff film industry is an urban legend while secretly running the black market for it (though I think the second one is more Catharine McKinnon's pet project). If you want to trigger gigabytes of pointless noise, try asking this on ThinkAtheist - the person you are after has left this site in disgust and can now be found there. She can rattle of half a dozen 10,000 word diatribes before lunchtime without raising a sweat. But I don't want to play this exercise in relativism because it's guaranteed to degenerate into a spiteful noise-fest.

I think what's "worse" would depend on the nature of the murder. Murder could be lesser or worse than rape, in this case. Some examples are: killing resulting from self-defense < rape < killing out of rage.

The murdered person can't care- they're dead. The raped person will care for the rest of their life. From the perspective of the victim- and not of the victim's family, friends, etc- rape is the bigger bad.
