Consider what Pope Benedict’s organization did to freethinkers and scientists during the days of the witch hunts and human sacrifices. The Catholic Church murdered and tortured thousands of deep thinkers and thereby stultified and fossilized human thought and curiosity. Humans should have evolved into a spiritual entity by now.

Left to me, I would do to him what the church did to Galileo. I would place him under house arrest in one of his many mansions—the church loves real estate. He could take care of his Ratzinger Foundation, that’s fine, but the scholarship kids get their choice of school, non-parochial preferred. Otherwise, he has to keep his mouth shut. Galileo couldn’t even talk to his daughter.

How can the pope go to Africa and tell the people NOT to use birth control? Consider the poor country of Malawi, for example. Malawi, a tiny country near east coast of Africa, is one of the least developed and most densely populated countries in the world. Out of a total population of around 15 million, five million are dying of starvation and the country is wracked by AIDS. In spite of all the premature death— life expectancy is 43 years—the country is growing in population at the rate of 2.8% per year.

The conditions in Malawi and much of the entire continent of Africa are an insult to reason. It’s as if Pope Benedict VI gets something out of human suffering and tribulation. The population of Malawi is 80% Roman Catholic with another 13% Muslim, who believe Allah will bless them for every baby they conceive.

As humans continue to cover Africa and the rest of the world like bacteria on a rotting apple, precious wildlife populations continue to plunge. Eastern lowland gorillas have been devastated 70% since 1994. Starving tribesman actually kill gorillas for what they call bush meat. There are less than 1000 white rhinos and countless other species on the brink of extinction.

The pope believes that’s okay because animals don’t have a soul. Humans come first and many Catholic theologians believe the Earth can sustain 30 billions souls. So what if all the narrowly endemic animals are gone; the more voices lifted in prayer the more pleasing it is to God.

See my post “Why I’m a Militant Non-Believer.” By illegally manipulating the Bush/Kerry election of 2004, the pope condemned present and future humanity to the mischief of an incompetent corporate stooge.

Aaron, Thanks for the comment. I dig your Joycian stream-of-consciousness style.

As far as my article being depressing, I look at it this way: It would be a lot more depressing if we lived in that fucked-up country, Malawi.

Not all my stuff is disheartening. I have a DUI Story on my blog that I think might be some fun. It’s about the plight of the individual against the state. I guess it relates to the ills you cited in your comment.

To me, it all stems from the fact that humanity evolved from quadruped carnivores. And what makes matters worse, assholes like the pope don’t even realize it.

Fuck the Pope, eliminate the religion. Some other prick will just take his place.

I know. And what's gets me about this, is Catholics still sheepishly go to mass every Sunday as if nothing happened. The church can do no wrong. If the Inquisition didn't set them straight, what's a little pedophilia.

On the same Pen and Teller episode they say that the current Pope is the one responsible for the church's policy of shuffling pedophile priests around instead of handing them over to the authorities. This is just plain criminal.

Think of all of the abuse victims whose abusers have never been tried. If they're not going to hand over these sex offenders, we should have a right to throw them out of our communities.

The day when the pope is some minor death cult leader, although far off, can't come soon enough.

Dave, I totally agree with this. The church started off as a bizarre cult and that’s the way it’ll end up. To the Romans, Christians had strange handshakes, met in secret rooms and even in the catacombs with thousands of dead bodies. They even had the strange habit of eating and drinking their savior.

Sam Harris says the mass is a continuation of the human sacrifice compulsion that’s plagued humanity since the Paleolithic Period. The idea is, we’ll sacrifice the Son of God constantly over and over, and He will stay appeased for the original sin.

The whole idea is nuts. Why does God need to be appeased like some Sicilian Mafia boss? And I had nothing to do with Adam and Eve, so what are you punishing me for?

Beautiful Jenifer, it would sure help. The great hippie poet Allen Ginsberg ended his 1969 Playboy Interview with the line, “what we need is a hip president and a hip pope.” We might be half way there, if the Republicans would stop dividing the country.

One of the main reasons I realized Catholicism was full of it thirty years ago is the "infallibility" of the pope. The belief that any man can be infallible is beyond ludicrous. He could decree today that condoms/birth control are fine and woman can be priests and since he's basically god-on-earth, what he says, goes.

As I've said before: The height of the Roman Catholic Church and the Dark Ages didn't coincide by accident. The day when the pope is some minor death cult leader, although far off, can't come soon enough.

I just thought of this: How many popes would we have to go through to find one that's actually suited for the job? LOL, wow!

Joshua, is there a link for a the Penn and Teller skit?

I didn't know that W. granted him immunity. What balls! If the pope found any pedophiles, they wouldn't be prosecuted and the pope could work it out within the Church. Is that it?

Thanks, Earthling, but sometimes I fell like I'm from another planet, myself.

Actually he was only 12 when the war broke out and was drafted into the Hitlerjugen only reluctantly. His father was a cop and must have generated an authoritarian personality. Pope Benedict is a very diligent bureaucrat.

He’s gotta take his head out of the paperwork and red tape and take a walk through the slums in the capitol city of Lilongwe. The city grew in population from 98,000 in 1977 to over 9,000,000 in 2009. There is massive deforestation and forests are being degraded at an alarming rate—as in Brazil, which is also over 80% Catholic.

Penn and Teller did a good episode of Bullsh!t on the Catholic Church.

I was personally horrified to learn that George W. Bush, while in office, granted the Pope immunity in any investigations into child abuse...as if this silly little man in his silly little costume is any better than any other human being on earth.
