If New York state passes a same-sex marriage law... That will bring more than 1400 rights to married couples 400 state and 1,000 federal rights are given to married couples.

However, if your in a relationship, you and your loved one better hurry up and get married because it could get over-turned...

We shall see....

I just love the irony of government legislation.
Any who, I hate but have to not only defend but teach slippery-slope arguments. My students and I were just talk about same-sex marriage and rights. I told them the same thing if the U.S. gov't allows this, they open the "flood gate" for: polygamy, bestiality, pedophilia, etc. So, its almost a shot in the dark with this issue. However, I hate that we are compared to polygamists, zoophiliacs, and pedophiles!!!

Anwar,
When it comes to same-gender-loving, hardly anyone anywhere has a long history of making sense. I look at the current movement toward (as opposed to actual achievement of) equalization of rights and social status as that little opening in the clouds that lets the sun shine in. Whether it's a harbinger of blue skies, or whether the opening will close and the sunbeams dissipate, we can't say.

And that's just in the US.

One logic-question, just for the sake of argument. If US states are to honor foreign marriages (ie, same gender), that are not currently legal in those US states and that the US government explicitely passed a law stating the states dont have to (DOMA), then why would the US states not also have to honor polygamous or child marriages that are legally sanctioned in other countries? I don't buy into slippery slope arguments, but it's a legal issue. This is a friendly, not argumentative, question :-)

Yeah. My boyfriend and I talked about it last night. I was reading commentary about it and they all agree that it's a human rights issue. Regardless if people agree with homosexuality they in general, agreed that it is a matter of human rights. Not to mention, the amount of revenue the state will receive if gay marriage becomes legal....So, honestly, it just may pass...Oh BTW, I read an article in Ms. Magazine that says we (New York) were next for it to pass. So if this becomes a go then not only I but so many others can reap the benefits of this becoming legal.

Lastly, its weird that it's not legal. Simply because if someone goes to a state or country in which it is legal New York honors the marriage. To me, that makes no sense. New York should just make it legal....

I suspect that will work in your favor. It's hard to say.

It's more state ran. I.E. the state legislature in Albany dictates what happens, more so than the actual citizens of new york...
