Idol Worship

I watch American Idol. Sorry. It’s one of my guilty pleasures. Go ahead and judge……

So last night was Grand Ole Opry night and all contestants were required to sing country songs, regardless of their own musical style. One guy did a Carrie Underwood song. Country is not my preference and I have never heard a Carrie Underwood song in my life, until last night. It was a song called “Jesus take the wheel” and it was one of the most irresponsible songs I’ve ever heard. I was so annoyed by these lyrics that I had to post them here.

She was driving last Friday on her way to Cincinnati
On a snow white Christmas Eve
Going home to see her Mama and her Daddy with the baby in the backseat
Fifty miles to go and she was running low on faith and gasoline
It'd been a long hard year
She had a lot on her mind and she didn't pay attention

Before she knew it she was spinning on a thin black sheet of glass
She saw both their lives flash before her eyes
She didn't even have time to cry
She was sooo scared
She threw her hands up in the air

Jesus take the wheel
Take it from my hands
Cause I can't do this on my own
I'm letting go

Save me from this road I'm on

It was still getting colder when she made it to the shoulder
And the car came to a stop
She cried when she saw that baby in the backseat sleeping like a rock
And for the first time in a long time
She bowed her head to pray
She said I'm sorry for the way
I've been living my life
I know I've got to change
So from now on tonight

Jesus take the wheel
Take it from my hands
Cause I can't do this on my own
I'm letting go
So give me one more chance
Save me from this road I'm on

I guess the lesson this song is trying to convey is, you have no control over your life and your actions. Don’t try to think quickly in emergency situations, just close you eyes and do nothing. That is the worst advice ever. What if Captain Sully had let Jesus take the wheel?

Okay, so they're probably trying to be symbolic, so:

If you're living your life too fast, and you're in a dangerous situation, and your depressed, and your child may be affected -- let Jesus take the wheel?

It's very difficult to frame this in any manner that doesn't make the author of the song (and anyone who sings it) seem like a blithering idiot. I can't even wrap my mind around it.

Example: Octomom. She is famous why? Because she has an overused uterus? People, please...
