Even something like that shouldn't be taught as a rehearsed mandatory statement school children should be forced to recite.

You can thank the Jehovah's Witnesses for getting the pledge of allegiance thrown out of schools. The Radical Right (Christian) factions want it back and hold the argument. If a pledge to the constitution and bill of rights was substituted for the flag and god it might make it through the supreme court.
