How is believing in a God that you hate better than not believing in God at all

I usually reserve posts on my personal blog for rants and ravings of mine, because I don't want to waste the times of all the social groups on here.  This is no exception, it's another of my own personal rants.

I recently saw an episode of "Becker" in which Becker insists that God is a man-made construct and says that he doesn't believe in him.  He is immediately chastised for his position by all of his peers and especially by Jake, the blind owner of a newstand at Becker's favorite diner.  Despite that fact that Jake hates God for robbing him of his sight, but he still believes in him.

Granted this is a work of fiction, but I once had a real-life encounter similar to this one.  It was during my time working at Goodwill, one of my coworkers was practically the poster child for 'roid rage.  He was very confrontational, rude, and never seemed to get along with anyone.

Now, I had been openly Atheist for a few weeks with these people and this man said that while he hates God (he went so far as to say that he wishes he could burn a bible at breakfast every morning), he still believes in him and that somehow makes him holier than me.

I spoke to my father, who is a liberal Christian, about this interaction.  Now, somehow my father has read the bible cover-to-cover and is still a Christian and according to him, this jerk's argument is valid.  Somehow, according to the bible, believing in God while simultaneouly hating him is better than not beliving in him at all.

To me, this is another example of religion's blatant hypocrisy.  What's the point in believing in a God that you hate?  The irony here is that many televangelists and eveangelicals believe that Atheists only say they're Atheists BECAUSE they hate God.  Have you guys had an experience like this?

Anyway, I eventually got the last laugh when the douchebag was fired and subsequently banned from the store because of his attitude.

This is the abject "slave" mentality the late Mr. Hitchens referred to. Like the billboard that was vandalized in Pennsylvania, slaves are to obey their masters. Notwithstanding their hatred, they still lick the boots of death born out of fear of an imaginary afterlife.

Curioser and curioser. How people can be so self delusional. It appears this affected his entire life. Religion, it does(not do) a body good.

All this smells to me very much like a different flavor of ass-covering.  These people hate what they've been taught, yet their fear of hell and/or judgment overrules their hate.  I don't know how someone could get more disjointed (and, as you observed, hypocritical) than that.

I have to agree with your father that if you believe in God you can hate him all you want. It may be silly, or hypocritical, but I see no reason why you can't hate a God you believe in.

Those theists who claim that atheists hate God are just making up ridiculous lies, as always. How is it possible to hate something that you don't believe exists? It makes as much sense as hating the Tooth Fairy or Easter Bunny.

Pope's 'exorcism' caught on film video

Posted by Debra Stevenson on May 21, 2013 at 2:37pm 0 Comments

There is a video of the Pope's 'exorcism' caught on film.  The man isn't demon possessed, there are likely no 'real' demons.  He's just delusional and doesn't want to accept personal responsiblity for his own behavior for his own dysfunctional life.

Do you support 'traditional' marriage, vot now ad

There is an ad that reads ' Do you support 'traditional' marriage? Vote Now"!  .

No, I don't support 'traditional' marriage because there is no such thing. I support heterosexual and same-sex couples marry each other legally , yes.  'Traditional' marriage promoters largely do not believe that heterosexual women are co-equal to their husbands.  Their only purpose in 'traditional' marriage is to sexually satisfy their husbands if they can and raise children and do all…

i've got no problem with everyone saying "merry christmas" on christmas day.  however, they've turned it into an entire holiday season where it lasts a month or more.  in those situations it should be perfectly acceptable to say "happy holidays" or call it a…

My first funeral as an atheist

I posted the bulk of this on another thread, but wanted to add some context separately.

I finally confronted my faith and embraced the fact of my atheism late last August, 2012. Days after I revealed my "epiphany" to a few friends who knew me from another message board, my sister died from Lou Gehrig's Disease (which pissed her off because she hated catching a disease from someone she never f---ed).

THAT was my sister, understand? She was a beautiful, life-loving, potty-mouthed…
