Global Warming and the Religious Right--They Will never Learn!

In its ongoing romance with the inane, insipid and ignorant, the Religious Right represents the Mariana Trench of junk science in its spurious misrepresentation of the reality of global warming. It is another round of religion versus science that the former is destined to loose, but undoing the damage caused by the deliberately duplicitous rantings of the Religious Right may go beyond the failsafe point.

Positions taken by the Religious Right clearly reveal the biblical agenda behind their latest efforts to dethrone science. The sole premise for their argument finds its genesis in the ultra-conservative exegis in selected portions of the Bible. Although claims of scientific studies accompany the blindingly faulty findings, as usual absence of reputable scientists reveals the paucity of claims of scientific veracity.

It has become common for Right Wing religionist to make claims about science that have no basis in fact or base their argument on literal interpretation of the Bible. Though the tactic creates uncertainty, it also puts a blot on religion as dishonest and manipulative.

Religion fought the heliocentric theory popularized by  Copernicus denying that the earth revolved around the sun. A telescope and Galileo Galili proved the theory right and for his efforts he found himself under house arrest. The Catholic Church acknowledged his finding near the close of the 20th century, more than 300 years after the fact.

The theory of evolution came about through the work of Charles Darwin 150 years ago and is accepted as fact by nearly every scientist in the world. Yet, biblical literalist crusade to keep it out of schools a tactic that has dire consequences in a global society. Religion so often picks the unwinnable quest and in the process blocks progress.

Stem cell research is at standstill because of religion. No one can guess the number of medical cures that might have saved lives if research continued. Although no one would admit it, religion is hardly relevant in today's world, at least not as fundamentalist interpret it. Putting the Bible on literal ground makes it easy to debunk as the inerrant word of God.

The charades of the Religious Right and their unswerving fan club in the South made a mockery of religion and their continued quest to override science based on literal interpretations kills whatever good feelings Americans once held about Christians. Although they are a small group when compared to the rest of Christianity in America, reaction to their behavior is cast on the rest of Christianity, so much so, that Christians are fast becoming a disliked group.

Global warming is a fact. Already, changing weather patterns have scientists working day and night trying to find a way to reverse the damage, while the Christian Right not only disbelieves it, but opine that man cannot destroy what God made. Unfortunately, religion's win record with science does not bode well for any sucked in by their blatant manipulation of research and biblical literalism.

Perhaps scourge of locust or frogs wil convince them. Sorry! I forgot Pharoh hardened his heart. Nevermind.

The petty and cynical part of me wants global warming to spiral out of control and kill us all, just so we can point at the denialists and say "We told you so, you stupid asstards!". But the rational side of me realizes that the end of the human species is probably not a desirable outcome.
