Un-Go is one of the series I've picked up for Fall 2011. The first episode is out and it's time for a little feedback.
Un-Go is in the detective anime classification right now (see: Dantalian no Shoka, Gosick, etc.) and in the first episode we find ourselves in a murder mystery at an elaborate period ball. Rumors abound that the victim, Kaoru Kanou, was about to be arrested. Who wanted him silenced?
The challenge to solve the mystery falls to two competing parties - Kaisho Rinroku (who sends his daughter Rie to the party as a proxy), a famous detective, and Yuuki Shinjurou (called the "Defeated Detective" because he often fails to solve the crimes before Rinroku) and his sidekick, Inga.
As with any show based on solving a mystery, it can be tricky to discuss without spoiling what makes the show fun to begin with. So, what makes Un-Go different? Right now, that would be Inga. Appearing as an eccentric young boy, Inga can transform in to a vixenish woman with the power to compel the answer to a single question.
The mystery does wrap itself up nicely within the allotted time, so it remains to be seen if this will happen every week or if there will be some story arcs to drive viewing. The series is done by BONES so that's always a point in favor. The animation is clean, the story decent, and it's got me looking forward to next week's episode.
