Don't be greedy.....Evolve or fall

So I have been thinking a lot lately about what is really wrong in the world, and more specifically, what's wrong with this country.  Where's it going?  What ARE we???  Now, I am no genius, but I certainly like to think of myself as a rational person who tends to look at things for what they are....good or bad.  Here's the way I see it....and I may be called any number of names for my opinion, but it's merely an opinion, and probably flawed at that, but here goes.

We as Americans, have a VERY screwed up value system.  We have been teaching greed and personal wealth as the "American Dream"...to be rich, own homes, boats, drive a hot car, make MONEY be beautiful, or buy plastic surgery to make you beautiful and we equate that with what is supposed to be success and what will make us happy.  Well excuse me for noticing, but I don't think there could actually be a more BASE instinct than that.  It's all about getting for yourself, for the benefit of yourself.  To own something that is yours and only yours, and to own as much stuff as you can for yourself and perhaps to give to your family but never for the benefit of anyone other than yourself or your family. How can this be good for the world??  See, this world's population is getting ready to reach critical mass.  Oil is going to run out, our water supplies are being depleted exponentially faster than they are able to replenish.  The infrastructure of this country is falling apart, bridges collapsing gas lines blowing up, sewage seeping into fresh water supplies...you get the drift.  THEN let's not forget the mountains of DEBT we as Americans pile upon ourselves that we will never realistically escape from.  Our current economic system cannot continue to operate as it is now.  Debt spending, and why???  BECAUSE WE WANT SHIT.   Because we need oil to get it and we don't care what it does later because we know what we need right now?

Why is it that rather than deal with these issues, that ARE going to corn hole us, we get stories in the news about Charlie Sheen the fucktard???  The perfect picture of where greed and excess leads you....train wreck!!

I'm no prophet, and I don't pay attention to all those end time jack wagons that are out there yelling about the end.....but I also KNOW enough to know, that ALL great civilizations fall.  They fall when they are at the height of their power, indifferent to the rest of the world's needs, prone to over indulgence and their over consumption of resources.  Every one of these things is going on right here in our own back yard.   I wonder if there will ever come a time when we, as Americans can value the American dream NOT as personal wealth, but as the common good and happiness of it's people?  If there could be such a thing, I think Gene Roddenberry's world, had the right idea.  Society not based on money, wealth or religion, but knowledge and reaching your full human potential.  I think the greed thing is entirely dated, and has served the whole world nothing but misery.  Maybe learning to equate success in life to something other than how much money and shit you have, could be the next great step in the evolution of mankind?   Sorry, I just get to thinking about these things sometimes, and yeah, I know I'm American and not supposed to think this way....so socially minded and all, but I just can't help it.  I know wrong when I see it........Throw me some thoughts on the subject!  What do you think we need to do to evolve??  How will we evolve?  Stepping out from the cloud of religion and into the light of fact and reality a good place to start???  What doesn't escape me is the irony that the majority of Americans claim to be christian, and indeed try to say that this is a christian nation, yet they are set squarely against the principals their savior Jesus, taught.  Is it me or has the FACT that their Jesus was a liberal seem to just be conveniently forgotten??  And they wonder why we atheists find it hard to respect them when they continually cherry pick which parts of their "faith" they are going to acknowledge and follow.  Only the ones that cause them the least amount of effort or responsibility for anyone other than themselves.  Not very christian.  I think the next step in human evolution, is to declassify greed as a virtue, and re-classify it as behavior that is destructive to humanity.  Just my thoughts.

I think you are 100% correct Jim.  What blows my mind, is the lack of concern about any of this there seems to be.  When the dollar collapses, what's going to happen then?  Like it or not, being greedy and possessing things, are not earmarks of an evolved society.  Reaching your full human potential is.  Not how much more shit than your neighbor you have.  Bass Ackwards....

The realization that our current view of success is recipe for disaster will probably come after the disaster. We are already on a rapid down hill slide toward a failed economy. The dollar is on the verge of losing its status as the world's reserve currency. The American middle class is becoming smaller every day . And the people responsible for the economic quagmire in which we are sinking are still operating in the same mode that caused the mess in the first place – I don't see things are getting better. What I fear is the 2008 recession was just an early phase of a much worst disaster down the road – and the road is very short.

My question....is humanity capable of limiting it's desire to have everything, and scorching the earth to get it without a care for the future?  What is "All" really?  Is it possible for us as people to reboot our desires to be not so self centered?  Is it possible for us to see exactly where this is all leading?
