Treatment of victims (and abusers) falls far short!  There is a treatment for abusers, while there aere several kinds of abusers!  ...  1. A mean abuser is just mean due to religious beliefs, or for other reasons/excuses.  2. A pedophile sexually abuses because he is a "baby lover", good grief!  3. A sociopath lacks empathy/feeling, so he abuses.  4. Others (rare) suffer from MPD or other affective disorders due to earlier abuses...  A program for each kind of abuser should exist!!!  ...  Victims:  A program should meet each persons needs.

Very good point Earl. A comprehensive health care delivery system will make a huge difference. Even though treatment is available, it is so very costly, many people don't get care. The general public pays a heavy price financially and socially for not providing adequate health care, decent housing and healthy food.

Thanks, Joan...  Sorry it took a while to get back to you; the website was messing up yesterday.  ...  I HOPE that those who need help are getting what they need; it seems to me that, if even women in the military are being raped by the dozens, someone sure needs to help our children!!!

Yes, there are different kinds of abusers and victims and different treatments exist with variable success rates. Often both abusers and abused lack interpersonal skills such as communication, problem solving .... etc. These skills are easily learned and outcomes usually positive. Attitudes play an important role in such situations; if one feels entitled to the goods and services of others and another feels responsible for providing those goods and services, a rethinking of roles, traditions, and values can create a healthier skill development environment. These kinds of behavioral problems are learned and can be retrained, if the individual wants to make changes.

Sociopaths exist beyond my ability to provide training. Anti-social behaviors exist that are learned very young or are not learned, but are a manifestation of brain activity. We closed many institutions for the mentally ill and now treat them as criminals. Instead of mental health facilities built to provide safety and treatment, many prisons were built to imprison that population.

"the complex of social forces that lead to less restrictive guidelines for involuntary commitment are not the result of conservative politics per se, but rather a coalition of fiscal conservatives, law and order Republicans, relatives of mentally ill patients, and the practitioners working with those patients. Combined with a sharp rise in homelessness during the 1980s, Ronald Reagan pursued a policy toward the treatment of mental illness that satisfied special interest groups and the demands of the business community, but failed to address the issue: the treatment of mental illness."
