I have dealt with the issue of religion in schools extensively on another board, specifically in a group with the title, I Think Indoctrinating Children With Religion Is Child Abuse.  The fact of the matter is that children do not typically have the critical thinking or intellectual capacities to be able to deal with religion, its subtleties or its penchant for indoctrination.  For this primary reason, religion should be utterly absent from early childhood education.  If it must be included in a standard curriculum, some parameters should be observed:

• The techniques and skills of critical thinking and analysis should also be a part of that curriculum.
• ALL major religions, including Abrahamic and eastern traditions should be covered.
• No preference or favoritism to any one religion should be in evidence.

Certainly, christianity has had a substantial influence on current western civilization.  The problem is that said influence may be gauged to be both positive and negative on several fronts.  If such a topic is to be broached in a secular environment, ALL sides of the story should be dealt with, and alternatives to it should be available for questioning, analysis and discussion.  To do otherwise is to allow the proselytism of the church enter the secular realm unhindered, as it has done for entirely too long.
