Dictators & Atheism

If I had a penny for every time a theist told me that on many occasions in history, atheism has been the cause of genocide...particularly Pol Pot, Hitler and Stalin.

I wrote a blog post about Hitler and Stalin in particular over at my blog: http://www.odd-innuendo.net. I won't bother reposting it here, as I would just be preaching to the choir.

I'm getting tired and frustrated. Maybe I need to take a break and do what I enjoy...photography and art...but then again, I just can't keep away from debate!

Comment by Asa Watcher on February 24, 2009 at 11:15am: I think it is important to point out that when tyrants, or dictators, gain power, all ideology becomes moot. Stalin did not kill in the name of atheism, he killed in the name of Stalin. I don't really think we can blame Hitler's Christianity for the holocaust any more than we can blame his lust for expanding and holding power.
A tyrant will use whatever he finds in his toolbox to extend and hold control. I think Stalin killed a lot of atheists, and it isn't like a lot of Christians didn't pay the ultimate price during WW II.
If anybody accusses Hitler and the Nazis of being atheist, have them google "Nazi
belt buckles" to discover the delicious irony themselves.

But for good people to do evil things, it takes religion.”
