See the innocent wide awake
The fear of death it makes him quake
A visit from the King of Hell
Was promised by those who wish him well

Those caring parents in their misguided way
Thought fear the tool to make him pay
“Be good” they say “and you better heed this”
Or expect a visit from the Lord of darkness

And the boy, who knew no good or bad
Is traumatised, his life is sad
And fearing that unending night
Asks help from God to ease his fright

But God in his elusive way
Failed to come and save the day
His faith in God it turned to dust
While fear of the Devil ruled the roost

Instead of nights of boyish dreams
He lay awake with muffled screams
God was dead in this young boy’s heart
But the Devil lived and played his part.
