Bigotry Against Atheists, From an Atheist.

This weekend I had a conversation with an Atheist at an informal local meetup that upset me and made me angry. The more I think about it, the angrier I got. What was said boiled down to an assertion that Atheists are hate-filled bigots. Funny thing, if a religious person had said it I wouldn’t be angry.

So what was said? It went something like this: (I’ll call the other party “Jack”)

Jack said, “I am agnostic, I don’t believe in God, but I don’t hate religious people.”

“Jack, that’s not what it means to be an agnostic.”

“That’s my definition.”

So, Jack meant what I thought he meant; Atheists are haters. And hes doesn't know that he is an Atheist too.

Just who is the bigot here? Atheists like Jack who accuse other Atheists of hating religious people.

So my message to the Jack’s reading this. Please don’t call yourself an Atheist and if you can find something more accurate than “agnostic” to call yourself. We get enough of your kind of bigotry from others.

I think there are people who want to remain "on the fence" so to speak.  They don't really know what they do or don't believe and are likely to make comments such as these.

The anti-theists among us hate the sin, not the sinner.

The notion that anti-theists hate theists stems from ignorance of religious history, current events, ignorance and propaganda.

The notion that atheists hate theists stems from the ingredients.
