Ok, this is driving me crazy. So I've recently finished college with a BA and now I'm looking for work, but I don't want just any job, I want a job working to help improve the position of Atheists in the US. It's something I'm very passionate about and I would love to pour my energy into it. Naturally I ask myself "Ok, what groups are there that you might like to work for?" I do a little research and come up with a list. FFRF, CFI, AA, AHA, just to name a few. So I've been sending my resume to these groups, telling them how badly I want to work for them, and I hear nothing back. Some of them have "careers" sections on their website, some of them don't. I keep thinking
"They have to hire people! Just look at this website, there has to be somebody who maintains it, or this newsletter they put out, there has to be a team that creates it, or this lawsuit they're filling, there has to be a whole legal team with assistants! Who are these people? How did they end up getting those jobs? And how do I get one of those jobs too?" It's maddening knowing you desperately want to work in a field, but at the same time not knowing how to even get into that field.

Ah, good distinction Asa. I guess a better way of trying to state what I want is to work for an organization that works towards a world that is more compatible with atheism (ie, keeping the government secular, or promoting humanism, etc), not necessarily atheism.

Dustin;
I’m not sure you will find any organization, or business, that is dedicated to the promotion of atheism.
FFRF is dedicated to the principles of the first amendment and promotes separation of church and state, or, as they like to say freedom from religion.
CFI is a Humanist organization and promotes, well, Humanism. Most organizations are formed with the purpose of promoting something.
Atheism, by its nature, is not the promotion of anything. It simply is the admission of a lack of faith in a god(s)...more like a natural state of being. For that reason, atheism is a difficult thing to perceive as a cause.
Perhaps if you introduced yourself to CFI, for example, as a person devoted to the promotion of Humanistic ideals you might receive a more positive reception.

Yeah, I'm hoping to do something like that, but being stuck here in SC is becoming a problem. I want very badly to relocate and live somewhere not in the bible belt for once in my life, but a lot of companies looking for entry level positions just aren't interested in people outside of their immediate area. (At least that's what I've discerned from all the ones that send me rejection e-mails citing my location...)

I'm really not sure. :-\ I've got document based research skills, but that's about it. The jobs that usually pay for stuff like that also tend to require grad school, which is something I don't want/can't afford to do at the moment. :-\

NOAA is cool, I applied there as well. I never really thought of it as getting paid to be an atheist, though I can see that. I was just hoping to make a good impact and still be able to pay rent while doing it. :-p

I think it matters, but you're looking to get paid for being an atheist. Nearly every scientist I've ever met is a freethinker, so maybe just look at NOAA, NIST, Universities, and other major hubs of science! Remember, the U.S. government is still officially separate from the church. I work in the Census and there's no god biz in here.

yeah, I figured that with Atheist Nexus, but FFRF and CFI have got to have some paid employees...(at least I think they would)

I hate to break it to you, but most of the people who help to keep this site going are volunteers. The only "paid employee," if you want to call him that, is Brother Richard. And he isn't exactly raking in the dough. Good luck, Dustin!
