I spent much of the morning yesterday, debating christians about gay marriage, on facebook. Some of the arguments were 'god made marriage to be between a man and a woman,' 'men parts were made to fit into women parts,' and the age old favorite 'if we open the door to gay marriage, then we open the door to people who wanna marry children, animals, multiple partners, etc.'  People truly are living in a religious bubble which cannot be penetrated by logic and reason. More than anything it made me feel sorry for these people's children who will grow up to think much like their parents do, thus continuing the cycle of bigotry and well, stupidity. Someone even had the nerve to say they were tired of the gays bashing the christians. Sadly, the christians pretty much run things in this country, and they rule by fear--which has always been a great motivator. Arguing with them for a few hours really leaves you feeling sad and hopeless for the future of America.

@ JS, I doubt anyone will want to argue with me anymore, I held my own and tired them out. But I got no one to change their view. I brought up the divorce rates among straight couples and was told marriages end because of sin, and we must all strive to be holy and avoid sin. It just seems like gays are held up to an impossible standard that even the straights can't manage to reach.

Well Steph, I felt attacked and felt I should defend myself instead of cowering in shame. I have nothing to be ashamed of and I think we do owe it to the cause to speak out and be heard whenever possible. Letting them live their faerie tales unquestioned does them no favors.

I don't like arguing with anyone actually. I agree with the quote that Pat posted.

If they want to believe in fairy tales .. let them be.

Haha, great graphic Pat! And ya Joe, super frustrating! I did my best to dispel a few myths, but I think it fell on deaf ears.

Yeah, these conversations can be super frustrating. I used to really put myself out there for public education work -- and i can tell it did help -- but it is exhausting work!

The good news is i found that dispelling myths about LGBT people (and marriage) is definitely possible, and i'm sure its the reason that increasingly people are coming to support same-sex marriage. If the last decade has taught me anything, it's that people CAN be taught.

The sad news is that some people carry around so many myths there just aren't enough hours in a day for us to personally dispel them! It can take several years of constant exposure to myth-busting from many sources for these messages to finally sink in.

And of course some people are just REALLY personally invested into their wierd myths, and those folks -- folks who have tied their ego to their heterosexual religious rituals in a big way -- they're almost impossible to reach :-(

Not believing in an afterlife does not mean i am a "sad' person.

I work in healthcare in a long term care facility and I deal with death on a regular basis. About a year ago the opportunity arose for me to take a palliative care course through my work.  I enjoyed it for the most part. It dealt with topics such as end of life care, pain relief and addressing the spiritual needs of different individuals based on their religious beliefs. There was one instance however that was decidedly unpleasant, and unfortunately really overshadowed the rest of my time in the…See More
