We mortals are composed of two great schools
Enlightened knaves or else religious fools
By fearing whom I trust I find my way To truth; by trusting wholly I betray
The trust of wisdom; better far is doubt

Another famous 'Arab' (probably of Iraqi or Afghan origin) freethinker and almost contemporary of al-Ma'arri was Ibn al-Rawandi. See also this Wikipedia article.
