Atheist Nexus

The World’s Largest Coalition of Nontheists and Nontheist Communities!

I am the director of a small IT department. We are currently retiring about 40 - 50 older computer in our office. They are much older Pentium 4 and or Celeron processors. Maybe 256 - 512 mb of RAM. Nothing spectacular. We decided to see if anyone in the office would like some of the old computers. A fellow employee, a deacon at a local church, asked if we would donate some for a battered women's and children's center run through the church. Of course without a second thought I offered 12 computers with monitors, keyboards, mice the works. I went out of my way to recycle any other available parts to max these things out. 1 - 2 GB of ram where possible, cd burners and dvd readers where I could. I re-imaged all the computer's and applied valid licenses to them all. I ran all the latest updates, installed some basic software (avast, openoffice). All along I worked closely with an employee of mine. A very nice young lady currently attending college. She is a very public lesbian and a fellow atheist.

All in all we were very pleased with ourselves for going out of the way to help such a good cause. I can't say that I would ever give money directly to a church but I am more than willing to sacrifice my time or money when I know it will go to a good cause even if there is some affiliation with a church.

What pleased me most was the very surprised look on my employee's and my co-worker's faces when I said, "Any time an atheist and a lesbian can help your church, you just let us know."

Oh, that's a good one! I love it. So much for atheists not having a moral code or any belifs to steer us in the "right" direction.

I wonder, did they have to exorcise those systems before using them?

On another note, back in the early 90s, I did some volunteer work for a women's shelter in Phoenix.

The shelter was run without public money and supported solely by private and corporate contributions. The lady who founded and ran it was an atheist and had a great deal of trouble obtaining help. Even though she was doing a really great service with a higher success rate than other shelters, no church or religious organization would help her at all. How sad that theist hypocrisy was holding back the doing of good works.

Haha! Christians seem to think they have a monopoly on acts of kindness.

For ages and ages they certainly have had a monopoly on acts of unkindness.

Well done and well said!
Will the theists and homophobes help us in our causes? LOL

Good job! I am often too shy to point out my atheism upon doing a good deed I am often fairly quick to point out that my actions show I'm a good person regardless of what I believe when someone tries to give me some sort of moral argument that says the godless are incapable of doing good.

I was prepared for the punchline of this story to be, the co-worker/church deacon's reaction to the thoughtful effort and donation being..."Thank you, Jesus!"

As a homosexual atheist, I'd like to add my HA HA HA. Non-religious people are far more likely to be philantropic than religious, statistically. Thanks for your example. I hope the PCs are used for good - and not to promote "Change Ministries" !

A good deed deserves congratulations! Maybe donating them to a purely secular cause would have been preferable, however...
