Very bad day for me on the hole, but pertaining to what this website is about is my largest hitch.
Today i was talking to two friends i had just met about the tornado that ripped apart the high school she had gone to and that i would have gone to if it hadn't. She was talking about the people in suburbs that hid in closets and bathrooms and had survived because of it, ending her sentence with something like "now thats god." This is where things get wobbly.
Not thinking like i always do, i say something like "Thats where they tell you to hide, in bathrooms or closets." Now, usually when things like this come up, i can hold my tongue. Not this time. A few gentle returns from both of us and it ended up being another statistics problem.
The question she posed was that if everyone survived and they all hid in either the bathroom or the closet (and the room that they didn't hide in collapsed) then why did her friend and others survive. Now that ive had time to think, i realize that she assumed that no one else died, she didn't know for sure, only that she didn't hear about them probably because the 8 deaths from the high school were all that she heard about.
And she only offered proof for that predicament for her friend, not the many other neighborhoods effected.
Anyway, she continued "Thats god." and i couldn't stop myself. "Yes, and that old lady that got her throat slit by a piece of glass, yes that was god too." (That was one of the deaths near the high school that she had mentioned earlier.)
After i said it, i was thinking "Gotcha....Wait...NO." I realized that it could end the relationship i was trying to build since she doesn't know im an atheist.
She returned with "Theres nothing you can say that would change my mind, and yes, it was her time to go." and she went and moved her car closer to the building.
I hate that whole "It was her time to go, thats why." crap they pull. Good luck proving that true or false.
Interestingly enough, my favorite person to talk to is a 48 year old college graduate Theist. A doctorate and two bachelors in Theological subjects. She would never pull that worthless piece of an argument. I even advised her to go Greek Orthodox instead of Roman Catholic because of historic reasons. We've sat and talked for hours and nothing like this has come about.
