To all former Christians - Bible study

First off, let me say that I've never been a church-goer. I'm not an ex-Christian at all. I was raised irreligious so the following only illustrates my ignorance on this matter.

Recently I had a client who was talking about having bible study tonight. I nod my head and go "Mmm...hmm" (I drive senior citizens around; doctors appointments, grocery shopping, etc). This post is not about my client. It's about bible study.

What popped into my head is the blatant contradictions in the bible. And what on earth do Christians do when they discover them at their bible study groups.

Can anybody help me out here? Are they just glossed over? Is it discussed in depth?

Does anybody have an example; a real-life scenario to share?

Well, I was told that a person is not supposed to read the bible by themselves anyway. Especially if you are new to religion. (want to study the bible) ugh.

One thing they do is pretend/claim they don't exist. Another is use apologetics to explain them away. "Now you see this seeming contradiction between verse blah blah and verse yadda yadda. But when you analyze them in light of such and such, you see there's no contradiction at all." And with a few neat twists and flips of words and logic, they can make anything in the Bible seem rational, and you seem like you are utterly clueless because you just don't want to believe.
