All the one-sidedness is getting to me!

This is my first blog post here. I've been steaming about something lately, so I guess I will use this opportunity to get it out of my system.

I don't know about other people, but one thing that I absolutely HATE post deconversion is all the xians who want me to read their favorite books or go to certain lectures from supposedly renowned scientists on the truth of creationism, but don't care to look at the same topics from a different perspective than their own. I spent 28 years as a thinking christian, so I've read a good bit, but now that I've divorced that BS, people assume that all I need to come back is a single book. Let me say that that could happen! I can imagine a set of evidences which would allow me to come back with a good conscience, but there is almost no chance that that book has been written yet. I think there is virtue in being able to hear arguments from a disagreeing perspective. I try to maintain that openness, but it seems that my xian friends do not. Oh, for a time when unbelief isn't so rare and remarkable!

Comment by funk Q on August 13, 2008 at 7:36pm: Everyone, it seems, has an agenda they want to influence you with. No matter what your philosophy someone always has a 'better' idea. The way I cope is to keep myself aware of what I accept and why I accept it, then I can smile and nod while the others talk, lecture, cajole or rant at me. The value of silence as an argument is underrated!

I get this from a select few xians in my life as well. I've also been accused of trying to "convert" people (more then once) for suggesting certain books or movies and being "angry" or "militant" when I stand by my convictions. I'm not the sort to tell others how to live their life or judge anyone based merely on a belief yet the same people that accuse me of being closed minded are so quick to judge.

Oh, for a time when unbelief isn't so rare and remarkable!

As a skeptic, I think its an important question to ask yourself. I feel your pain though.
