This past weekend I met up with a longtime friend, in fact, the lengthiest friend I have. In fact, the very first friend who I met in the United States, on my first day of school in this country. It's amazing that we still keep in touch even after 19 years and him moving to Atlanta, then me moving to Pittsburgh, then him moving to Boston, then me joining the Marine Corps, and yet we still think that keeping our friendship alive is worth a plane ticket or a 500 mile drive.

The thing is, this weekend as we were sitting at a bar catching up on life, we finally realized that both of us are atheists. After 19 years, it finally got cleared up. How amazing is that?

On the one hand, it goes to show how touchy of a subject atheism is in America that even longtime friends avoid discussing it. On the other hand, quite a lot of people I grew up around turned out to be atheists. Sometimes it makes me wonder if we all had a common influence.
