FLORIDA COURT SETS ATHEIST HOLY DAY

In Florida, an atheist created a case against the Easter & Passover holy days. He hired an attorney to bring a discrimination case against Christians, Jews & observances of their holy days. The argument was, it was unfair that atheists had no such recognized day(s). The case was brought before a judge. After listening to the passionate presentation by the lawyer, the judge banged his gavel declaring, 'Case dismissed.'

The lawyer immediately stood objecting to the ruling saying, 'Your honor, how can you possibly dismiss this case? The Christians have Christmas, Easter & others. The Jews have Passover, Yom Kippur & Hanukkah. Yet my client & all other atheists have no such holidays.'

The judge leaned forward in his chair saying, 'But you do. Your client, counsel, is woefully ignorant.'

The lawyer sai d, 'Your Honor, we are unaware of any special observance or holiday for atheists.'

The judge said, 'The calendar says April 1st is 'April Fools Day.' Psalm 14:1 states, 'The fool says in his heart, there is no God.' Thus, it is the opinion of this court, that if your client says there is no God, then he is a fool. Therefore, April 1st is his day. Court is adjourned.

I like it. Judge Declares April 1, holiday for atheists. He inadvertently made it official, even if he was joking, now Florida should be sued for non-compliance. Congrats to the attorney.

April Fool's day is perfect. In every way.

I do find this funny, but not for the same reason most people do.

There is much speculation on the origin of April Fool's Day, but one of the most commonly told is related to the adoption of the Gregorian calendar. When the beginning of the year was moved to January 1st, many people were unaware and ignorantly continued to celebrate the New Year as April 1st. Still others, despite being aware of the change, steadfastly refused to accept the new calendar and insisted on following their centuries old tradition. That was after all the way that it had always been done.

So, I cannot help but think that the people so eager to thrust this tale in my face every year closely resemble the very fools after which the day is supposedly named. It is those ignorant and unaware, along with those who willfully disregard progress and modern advances because they find more comfort clutching the security blanket of a worn and tattered tradition than facing reality, who truly embody the spirit of the day.

I think it would be great to celebrate April Fool's day as our holiday!
Think about how people would regret sending that crap around if it actually had the effect of strengthening us with a day to unite and be counted!

This was my response to her:

What am I supposed to say to that? It's funny and not much else. Thanks for a good laugh. Anyway most atheists (not that atheists really agree on anything) don't care what religious people do as long as they don't force it on others. I'm kind of disappointed that you've resorted to sending me silly emails of stories somebody made up, based on nothing other than their own narrow minded fears and misconceptions. I don't send you emails that jeer at your way of life. Whatever. Love you. Lets stick to leaving eachother alone on these subjects.

Riiiight. They believe in an invisible man who lives in the sky than can great wishes and inflict horrible punishments for all eternity upon those who have the brains not to believe in him.

And they call atheists "foolish?"

I used to get this sort of right-wing spam from my fundie relatives all the time until I finally told them to stop. Now I'm persona non grata with an entire side of my family because I'm apparently a godless Devil-worshiping commie who hates America, my family, apple pie, and JEEZ-us.

From the article Tommy cited. "However, religious commentators have criticized Hawking's theorizing, saying he can never hope to explain what is essentially unexplainable." Well doesn't that kind of invalidate their own "god" theory then? ;p
