No, I don't want to encourage the view that Darwin was the atheist Jesus especially when I consider Hypatia of Alexandria to be the atheist Jesus. Besides, we have Blasphemy Day (Sept. 30th).

Have we as Atheists got the collective balls to stand alone in our communities and be silent?

I personally don't have balls, being born female (just like Hypatia), so it looks like I'll have to sit this one out.

Think about it peeps, a whole day when every atheist refuses to speak, scientists, teachers, policemen, doctors etc. all just silent.
darwin was just a suggestion, others have so far been descartes, voltaire, summer solstice

I have thought about it, Crispy. There have been times when I took a day of silence because I could. I was in a circumstance where speaking wasn't absolutely necessary and it was a refreshing experience. HOWEVER, I will not keep silence when theists and idiot-children of assorted stripes want to superimpose their stupidity not just on me but the rest of the country if not the rest of humanity to salve their fear of diversity.

Nope, sorry, gonna pass on this one.

I think theists would love it if all of the atheists shut up for a day. They might even encourage us to shut up permanently.

I can see celebrating Drawin Day by wearing something emblematic of evolution - a fossil picture on a T-shirt, a baseball cap with a darwin fish, a piece of jewelry made from a fossil tooth (that last one is stretching it - but I do have a nice fossil sharks tooth that I inherited).

Or celebrate solar solstices and equinoxes that show our connection to the cosmos and relation of our planet to the sun.

It's hard enough to speak up. I already voluntarily shut up over and over again to keep the peace in various settings.

I'll pass as well.

Just what I said, oh thou crisp one ... for all I've seen, the theists aren't much for diversity, not in their general populations, not even in their belief sets. They don't like the GLBT community very much; they clearly don't like US, and considering their strident efforts at proselytism, it's pretty evident to me that they want EVERYONE to believe the PRECISE SAME THING. They give every appearance of being scared to death of diversity.

I guess I'm not down with that. I LIKE diversity, I LIKE the GLBT community (I happen to be a member thereof!), and belief never worked so well for me as KNOWLEDGE did ... so I'm not much for belief either ... and I'm not likely to shut up about that or them, absolutely not when someone's in my face, attempting to "save," "convert," or otherwise rescue me from reason, logic and discipline.

As I said, will pass on this particular puppy, thankuverymuch....

Loren - I am atheist because I (and everybody else) was born that way and as such I have no interest in 'making' everybody believe the same thing, my only interest is that everyone knows the truth.
For me, the faithful are only faithful because they have been lied too about reality.
I am absolutely FOR each and evry individual (GLBT and S) having the freedom to be diverse. However, sexual diversity is a human reality and not the same as the divesity of delusion which religion's promote.
I also like the GLBT community - I see them as kindred - they have to 'come out' at some point in their life in a similar way to us atheists.
I am absolutely against doctrines, and their equally abhorrent proponents - I just want everyone to know the actual truth of reality.
All my blogs are about attempting to get those faithful to see the fake in their faith.
I am not pushing anyone to take part, I just thought that it would be a powerful message to those who are fearful of announcing their atheism in their communities, if others (possible those respected within those communities) publicly displayed their atheism in a peaceful way.
