I go to the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Houston, Texas. I spend at LEAST 3 hours a day doing extensive vocal training and preparing for major concerts. A good 60% of the music that we have no choice in singing for the concerts is gospel.

Is this unconstitutional?

If I'm being forced to sing about my "love of the Lord", aren't my atheist beliefs being cast aside and stomped on? I brought this up in History class, and my teacher was very interested in researching it more, but the other students became rude and nasty so it never really went anywhere. I would appreciate some input - maybe this is something that should be brought to the attention of the higher-ups, if it truly is unconstitutional.

It is against the establishment clause of the United States constitution. Unless you go to a parochial school, you should not have to sing religious music.

I don't know if it's unconstitutional, but the same thing happened (and I assume still happens) at my high school, though my high school wasn't specifically a performing arts school. I think the reason 60% or so of the music you guys sing is that there just so happens to be a LOT of music made about God, much of which is vocally beautiful. For some reason, it never really bothered me. Of course, the songs made about God that I think are beautiful are more classical than gospel.
