I was just perusing positiveatheism.org when I came upon the following. I always knew (especially from his testimony on Capitol Hill regarding the "suggestive lyrics" foofaraw that Zappa was intelligent and well-spoken, but this just about says it all regarding the whole god and religion kick:

The whole foundation of Christianity is based on the idea that intellectualism is the work of the Devil. Remember the apple on the tree? Okay, it was the Tree of Knowledge. "You eat this apple, you're going to be as smart as God. We can't have that."

-- Frank Zappa

And just for fun, here's the link to a bunch of other refreshing wit and wisdom from the man who asked that cosmic question:

"You eat this apple, you're going to be as smart as God. We can't have that."

And it follows that Satan was the first equal rights and equal opportunity activist.

I prefer Don van Vliet / Captain Beefheart myself. That guy's brain just doesn't work like anybody else's on the planet. He said this about Zappa -

"I don't believe in time, you know, 4/4 and all that stuff, Frank believes in time and we could never get it together. He writes all his music and gets sentimental about good old rock 'n' roll, but that's appeasement music."

And some other gems -

"A carrot is as close as a rabbit gets to a diamond."

"There is only the slightest movement of the fingers that makes the v-sign different from the Nazi salute. Always watch that."

"Everyone's colored ... else you wouldn't be able to see them."

Grundgetta -- I believe Jaume is a fan, also. I know he worked Conceptual Continuity into a response to something I wrote.

Grundgetta -- I knew it was those flannel pojamas that provide the warm and fuzzy.

Pojama people... they got flannel up and down 'em, a little trap door back around 'em and some cozy little footies on their mind.

I've only ever been in a room with one other Zappa fan at a time, so that there are five of us who have commented here makes me feel all warm and fuzzy.

"Children are naïve -- they trust everyone. School is bad enough, but, if you put a child anywhere in the vicinity of a church, you're asking for trouble."
-- Frank Zappa
Love his music. His guitar solos are compositions. He picked great musicians. I think he was a bit full of himself but many (if not most) great artists are.

ONLY 8 to 10 times? DAMN, man!

Funny - Frank has been in my pantheon of atheist 'saints' for decades.

I ran across that like awhile back and enjoyed it immensely. FZ is one of my favorite musicians. Only saw him 8-10 times live ;-) But I still listen quite a bit. And as I mentioned somewhere else, Trouble Coming Every Day is still one of the best take-downs of American culture I've ever heard. Unfortunately, it seems to be absolutely current every 4-5 years.
