OK, this is my first post, but it's 1am and I'm a little tired. Need to be quick, as I'm not supposed to have PC access right now....
My family currently requires me to go to church with them twice a week: once on Sunday morning, and once on either Sunday or Wednesday night. That often interferes with my work schedule, but they don't care. They'll just kick me out of the house if I refuse (not joking, sadly).
Tonight I sat through an hour of the youth pastor explaining the primary tenants of fundamentalist Protestantism. I loved his number seven item -- "The universe didn't just come from nothing, and nothing made something, and something condensed until it exploded, and that made everything." You know the gist -- fundie definition of the Theory of Evolution. Yeah...
I interrupted him with "That's not evolution. That's one hypothesis about the Big Bang, though it's a rather antiquated one that really makes no sense, especially in the way you phrase it." To that, he responded with something about the origin of life. Again, I said "No, you're wrong again. That's abiogenesis. Evolution deals with how life develops complexity, not with its origins." He was obviously a bit flustered at this point, so I tried to explain a simple example of how natural selection of reproduction determines the genes that are passed on to a population's young. His response was "We can talk about that later."
Sure, great tactic. Cut and run so your flock doesn't see you get pwned. What I'd expect from a fundie who actually went to Seminary to get some bs (NOT B.S.!) degree in theology. *sigh*
It bothers me how fundies can be so willfully ignorant of science. You'd think if they're opposed to something, they'd at least want to know what it is that they are against. Then again, there's probably a good reason I've never met an evolution denialist who knew what evolution actually is....
I worry about all the people brought up in such an environment. How can they ever know the truth when all they're exposed to are lies?
Just some thoughts, anybody have any similar experiences with a fundie? I'll have some more stuff later if I get some safe time with my laptop. Until then, peace, love, and happiness!
