You're familiar with the satirical wit of "The Onion", right? Well, they have a new "Book of Known Knowledge". I got it from my library. Here's their definition of atheism.
Atheism, rejection of a belief in the existence of God in which one deeply devotes oneself to the nearly nonstop studying, writing, thinking, and talking about God. Upon raching the philosophical and logical conclusion that God cannot exist, an atheist will dedicate the rest of his or her life to poring over books about God, fervently arguing with those who believe in God, and meeting with other devout atheists to discuss God or listen to someone lecture passionately and at length about how there is no God. The firmly held belief that there is no God gives atheists a deep sense of purpose and meaning in their lives.
I don't know about you, but I love it! That's exactly why, in my very first Nexus post, I said I probably wouldn't write much about the subject (nor read other posts about it), despite this being a blog site explicitly for atheists. 'Nuf said.

Comment by SecularCortex13.x on March 9, 2013 at 10:26pm I see - there we have it - a "purpose" for Atheists.
Comment by GOD'aye on March 9, 2013 at 4:38pm LOL! According to Onion then, Atheism is a lifetime of active denial. I suppose there is purpose there!?!?
Though I'm only concerned about Creationists, so I'm more about protecting science from Evolution denialists rather than being concerned about the existence of god, of which is of no concern to me.
On the same token, Creationists also spend their life in denial and it gives them purpose!

Comment by Luara on March 9, 2013 at 9:45am ps The Onion's is the definition of atheism that many people have in mind when they say, "I'm not an atheist" even though they aren't religious and don't have any definite paranormal beliefs.
Comment by Luara on March 9, 2013 at 9:27am Einstein quote:
"I have repeatedly said that in my opinion the idea of a personal God is a childlike one. You may call me an agnostic, but I do not share the crusading spirit of the professional atheist whose fervor is mostly due to a painful act of liberation from the fetters of religious indoctrination received in youth. I prefer an attitude of humility corresponding to the weakness of our intellectual understanding of nature and of our own being."
which I can agree with.
Comment by Loren Miller on March 9, 2013 at 8:05am When god disappears from the words and thoughts and actions of our opponents, it's very likely I'll quit thinking about it myself.
For right now, though, so long as they want to act, I am determined to REACT, and sometimes, when I can anticipate, PROACT ... as in being proactive! C'mon, it's a word, ain't it? [chuckle!]
