Agree with Pat's assessment. The only way to counter the aggression, abuse, and conspiracy of the catholic cabal is to continue shining the light of day on their crimes and corruption.
I'm not placing any bets either Loren. A relative that I respect who has encouraged my education and progressive attitudes throughout my life, REFUSED to watch the documentary. I'm so bitterly disappointed....I cried it pissed me off so bad. If this person, who I had admired can be so indifferent about such an important issue.....in my mind....means not shit will come of it. 1 Billion Catholics, and numbers ever growing in third world nations, will hold the leadership incapable of wrong doing because they refuse to entertain even a thought that the church is capable of malfeasance. DESPITE HISTORICAL PROOF TO THE CONTRARY. I'm on my way to read your post right now Loren!!! I haven't been on in a while, and as always....I enjoy your insight! Keeps the cobwebs in me brain at bay!
In addition to O'Brien of Scotland, and Mahoney of Los Angeles, let's not forget Dolan of New York. He was recently deposed by attorneys in the Milwaukee Diocese bankruptcy proceeding wanting to know why, when he was there, $50 million was transferred from the diocese to a cemetery fund so the victims of pederasty couldn't get their hands on it. Graveyard groundskeepers must have one heck of a dental plan.
There is, however, a silver lining - albeit slim - in this whole sordid mess. And that is the glaring light of publicity. And, it could not have come at a more opportune time. The eve of the election for a new Pope. While all eyes are on Rome, the Italian newspaper La Republica published a story about a ring of gay Vatican prelates who apparently partied like rock stars, and listed that as the reason for the Papal resignation. The more the RCC gets a black eye, the better off humanity is. And, I strongly suspect (hope) the more the previously devout will start to walk away. At least it's a start.
I saw that piece on HBO and wrote about it, Kelly. It's an excellent piece of work. The shame is that there have been exposés of RCC behavior regarding child abuse long before now, and nothing near what SHOULD come from it HAS. About all I can hope at this point is that the repeated revelations in the US and Ireland and Germany and elsewhere may eventually break the camel's back and earn the RCC the loss of respect and accompanying hands-off behavior they've gotten to date.I am, however, placing no bets.
It's funny that all of this is happening after HBO began airing it's documentary "Mea Maxima Culpa: Sex Lies & the Catholic Church". It's a scathing look at the abject failure of the church to deal with the problem of child molestation world wide, and in particular, Pope Anthony's actions during his tenure as Cardinal, which bring up HUGE questions and are very revealing. It's just VERY curious indeed, that after this heart wrenching account, made by the victims who recount their struggle to stop these predators, that the pope would announce his retirement (first pope since 1415), the very month this documentary airs. WATCH IT....it confirms every shitty thing you thought and more, that has gone on, and what's worse, is the willingness of the flock to blindly follow the leaders that don't give a shit about anything but the church and not them.....UNREAL!!!
And the British Police do NOTHING. True, any statute of limitations which British law may place on the transgressions Cardinal O'Brien may have committed may have already expired, but that doesn't change the fact that something of that nature may be going on NOW. Considering what we've seen of the behavior of RCC hierarchy in the US, Ireland and elsewhere as regards the whole child abuse business, doesn't anyone think it's time to do some investigative work? Why not call in O'Brien, especially now that he is no longer under the protection of the church, and ask a few questions?Seriously ... how much longer are we going to continue to give these "sinister, hysterical virgins" a pass?
