I thought about posting this video as I would most other videos I like, but having watched it, I think it deserves a bit more attention.
David Silverman, president of American Atheists, speaks to the FreeOK2012 convention on what his organization has been about, what it is doing now, and a vision for the future of atheism in the United States.
Dave gets fired up in this video (truth be told, I think he's ALWAYS fired up!), and he has every reason to be fired up. Atheism is growing in the US, becoming more prevalent and with that, accepted and respected. We're the ones fighting FOR the Constitution when the Ten Commandment hawkers and the prayer-before-meeting promoters are fighting AGAINST it. Dave wants us to be proud of that, and I'm in total agreement.
Most of all, Dave has a clear and concrete idea of where he wants to see atheism go in the future. His concept is practical and workable and (dare I say it?) achievable.
I'll be honest: sometimes I worry about us, about how well we're doing and what religion might try to do when they truly realize that they're losing power and influence and they decide to lash out in reaction to our rising numbers and visibility. Then I see Silverman kicking O'Reilly's ass without blinking and standing up for atheism ... and I look at my own no-tolerance attitude and that of others around here ... and I think we have a pretty damned good shot at this.
But enough of my yap. Have a look at the video ... and be proud to be an atheist.

thanks for sharing Loren. as we inch closer to the one year anniversary of the RR i think back on it more and more. it was encouraging to hear that he wants to hold future rallies. it seems the news keeps coming in better and better for Atheists. polling shows us growing globally. courts continue to uphold secular principles. there's an Atheist magazine at Barnes and Noble?
i just read an article discussing the rise of secular student alliance growth on college campuses. the future looks very bright. it seems the political will of the Evangelicals is diminishing. not for lack of effort, but for public backlash to their social agenda. even moderate Believers can't tolerate their zealousness. this ultimately highlights the insanity which is the religious right. and thus makes us the de facto sane ones.

[Got a chuckle over that. I've met Dave socially many times and 1) yes, he really is that fired up and 2) despite his 'fire' he is truly a gentleman and you could safely introduce him to your Baptist grandmother.]
It is a complex road, there are issues and confrontations in the future that we don't even anticipate. We'll have fights, but hopefully will be reaching more people along the way. The more people you reach, the easier the road becomes.
