That's the point. It leaves belief and none belief on equal standing as it should be. Religion is the point I try to make. Religious believe that god and religion are the same thing. They can't see past the religion to their god to dump the dogma and religiosity. I don't think that people will become atheist because we are simply to Spiritual by our natural nature. The none theist seems the way to go to me. Believe or don't believe but leave each to their own and stop the fighting is all I am truly looking for.

You realize that the infamous Rep Paul Broun has both medical and chemistry degrees. Education does not cure this.

What is the definition of extremist? How many extremists are there in a given population?

AtheistTech - are you really an atheist, becuase you don't seem to know much about the problem of Dominionists in US government.  Ever heard of Rick Perry, or Rick Santorum, or Michelle Bachman, or Pat Buchanan, or Mike Huckabee, or Todd Akin?  They just a small example of the threat that Christian extremism represents to your government.  Are you really suggesting that a mandatory science class would have made any one of these individuals any less extemist?

When a person questions or turns away from organized religion it is not turning their back on God. It is turning away from organized religion and the crazy dogma of all the many religions.

sk1951 - That statement looks like it was written by an evangelical.  Where is there room for atheists in that statement?  I am an atheist, and I have turned my back on the concept of God as an even higher priority than turning my back on organized religions.  The way you framed that makes you appear to think that it is not possible to truly believe that there is no such things as gods.  Please clarify if that is what you think, or if your statement was just misworded.

The reason for believing the world is only 6000 years is because religion has been around that long. The reason the Fundi cannot view science is because of their creation dogma. There is no gray only black and white. Fundi will never come around to a half way view point. RELIGIOUS WARS…REALITY OR IMAGINATION

Organized religion is not God. When a person questions or turns away from organized religion it is not turning their back on God. It is turning away from organized religion and the crazy dogma of all the many religions. God did not create religion…people did. People that elevated themselves to god like positions and claimed to speak for god creating religious government rules and regulations. The founders were very concerned about organized religion and specifically wrote that Americans would be free from religious persecution. We were to be allowed to believe God however we wanted and to not believe if we wanted. God is not a part of religion. Religion has made God a part of religion. The religious have no right or place to say anything to anyone about how they choose to believe or disbelieve.

It's not that fundamentalists or evangelicals will never be influenced by anything other than the Bible and their leaders, it's just that they are far less likely to.  They believe that they already know everything thing that they need to know.  A class will not do anything for someone who is certain that they already have the critical knowledge, particularly when the material in the class does not align with what they know. There certainly are people who break free of that mindset, and many of them are members right here on AN, but expecting the ones who are still under full indoctrination to change their thinking because of a requisite class is like expecting a narcissist to admit that they are wrong.  Those inclined to get into politics will pretend to do whatever it is they have to do in order to carry out their god-given orders of advancing Dominionist policies.
