Comment by Sentient Biped on December 2, 2012 at 7:24pm I find this hilarious.
There's always Festivus!
Yes, I've heard Xtians say it's a pagan custom or something like that.
Comment by Pat on December 1, 2012 at 9:23pm And, 1500 years ago, to promote the spread of Christianity, Pope Gregory I wrote to the missionaries in Britain encouraging them to adopt pagan temples and holidays (the latter as various saints days) to make the transition from the native religion to Christianity much smoother. And, it worked. The first cultural anthropologist, if you will.
And guess where the converted British went to spread the "good news?" Yep! Germany. And guess what the Germans used to celebrate the winter solstice? Screw Jeremiah, when you can con the local populace to contribute to the Vatican by letting them keep their treesc. Besides, the locals couldn't read anyway, so there wasn't a lot of danger they'd catch on to the ruse. And it still works to this very day.
Comment by Loren Miller on December 1, 2012 at 8:31pm Hell, I no more pay attention to Jeremiah than I do the rest of the bible! I'll celebrate Yule or Saturnalia or Christmas as suits me ... and if someone doesn't like it, they can drop back 15 yards and [expletive deleted] themselves!
