Interviewed on Tacoma WA "Ask an Atheist" on Appointment to City Council

I sound funny on the radio.

My wife BethKz thinks it went well.

I think the interview okay, we’ll have to see if the village arrives with pitchforks and torches.

I was interviewed on KLAY-AM (1180 kc) in Tacoma, Washington Sunday on the "Ask an Atheist" radio programme, to discuss my appointment to fill the remaining term of a vacant seat on my Village Board of Trustees.

Though I am an open atheist, of the five candidates standing for the position, the Chairman said I was the least divisive candidate (and this in the most religious state outside the Bible Belt). I was unanimously selected by the board to fill the remaining term of a long-serving member who resigned in September and passed away October 2. I appear about thirty minutes into a show after an interview with an apostate Muslim and her difficulties, on the subject of the dearth of open atheists in American government.

(Representative Pete Stark was supposed to appear, but another engagement came up and they filled in with more questions for me. I hope I didn't embarrass the atheist community too badly.)

The podcast is now up at http://askanatheist.tv/2012/11/11/winning-the-elections-and-islam/

"Ask an Atheist" is a call-in programme sandwiched between a hunting programme and a lady religious ranter who spouts unconnected Bible verses and says "Amen" a lot. - James.

Thanks, Loren. As it happens now, the village really doesn't care what we do as long as we pay our taxes and shovel our walks in the winter. (The drought this summer meant I only had tumbleweeds to mow.)

They seem to be happy people moved to town (us) that are interested in the life and culture of the village - religion takes a back seat to pragmatic issues of everyday life.

Hey, James!

Just had a listen, and that was a good interview.  It was refreshing to hear that the town you're in wants to think PRAGMATICALLY about how it is run.  I'd be intrigued to know what happens in the long term regarding local attitudes in your area toward atheists, though it sounds as though things are pretty copacetic as they are.
