HELPING BELIEVERS TO KNOW THEIR BIBLE BETTER: PART 2

Here is a suggestion from Malcolm Hutton: National Secular Society Newsletter, 9 January 2009

"One could take action when a bible is presented in hotel or hospital. First of all go prepared with a yellow highlight pen and ask if the bible is yours to keep. Then highlight some of the most damaging verses, such as –

Luke 14:26 – hate your mother and father
Matthew 10:34/36 – he came not for peace but with a sword
Psalm 137:9 – it will make you happy to dash your little ones against a stone
Leviticus 26:29 – eat the flesh of your sons and daughters
Proverbs 28:25 – if you trust the Lord you will put on weight
Matthew 23:9 – don't call a priest, father
Deuteronomy 19:18/19 – Kill anyone who tells a lie
Exodus 35:2 – Kill anyone who works on Sunday
Leviticus 20:27 – Kill all mediums by stoning
Deuteronomy 21:18/21 – Kill a rebellious son by stoning
Leviticus 24:14/16 – Kill anyone who utters a curse by stoning."

Thousands more could be added to this list.

Part 1 of "Helping believers to know their bible better" was published by Terence on 7 September 2008.

Hello Dr. Meaden (Terence), Thank you for your glad tidings. It is wonderful to be part of a community of atheists and humanists much like myself. Please, call me David.

I teach anthropology and I am active in several atheist and secular groups, local and national here in the US. I also have a blog, www.paleolibrarian.blogspot.com, should you like to read some of my less academic writings on evolution and atheist issues. Cheers, David

2 Kings 6:28-29
"Give thy son, that we may eat him to day, and we will eat my son tomorrow.
So we boiled my son, and did eat him."

Even better. Thanks Loren! I especially like the quote generator.

A little research at the Skeptic's Annotated Bible finds those and a LOT more.

That's a fine list of horrific quotations from the bible. It occupies about 10 pages at 12-point.

Thanks for telling me.

Them claiming it was really grape juice is a great example of how easily they try believing the meaning was something other than the obvious. Something they do all through that book. I recall being in church and watching my Sunday school class sweat over trying to reanalyze why Paul said women should keep their mouths shut and never preach. The teacher was a woman. She was obviously nervous at that moment.

At any rate, let's analyze this... the guy says people usually bring out the best wine first, saying that they saved the best for last. Who the hell brings out the best grape juice first? Who celebrates with grape juice? Oh wait, I have a great idea, which they never seem to have ever come up with. Ask the Jews. They still exist.

Mormons: also, no coffee or even soft drinks that contain caffeine.

Baptists, at least the ones I used to know, preach against drinking alcoholic beverage. There used to be a joke in Oklahoma [dry state at the time] that Oklahoma would vote dry as long as the Baptists and the Boot-leggers could stagger to the polls.

See what I meant about their sophistry? Astounding. Our Sunday school teachers used to try to claim that the wine was really grape juice. I remember asking well, why didn't they just say grape juice? I think I was told that the word really meant grape juice but got translated wrong. . .next obvious question. . .so why didn't someone fix the translation? There must be hundreds of translations out there now that post-date KJV and I'll bet a lot that every one of them uses the word wine NOT grape juice.

Let's all just be thankful that most parents are more moral than the bible's god. Otherwise, we'd have a lot of children getting stoned to death, and kids learning to execute people working on Saturday... the day I most often buy my beer!!! Don't mess with the beer!

Speaking of which, Mormons... no beer? Didn't they read the part that says "eat, drink, and be merry"? Or the places where wine is talked of quite positively. Not to mention Jesus making wine for the feast, though I recall that he was a bit of a jack-ass about it.

Kiki, I used to tell my Mom that meant she wasn't supposed to spank me and instead was supposed to 'spoil' me. [I was a smart-ass] Needless to say it didn't work. I think I picked up that sort of sophistry from my church attendance. Ever notice how 'believers' manage to twist scripture to mean anything they wish?

The Rednecks are coming, the Rednecks are coming

Actually, the rednecks are here and everywhere. Let me say, I'm not a big fan of these people. That's putting it mildly. Need I describe them? You know who I mean. This seems to be the time of year when they come out of the woodwork. Here in Indiana, as the weather gets nice, the motorcyclists are out in full force. I hate the noise cycles make. Then there's the Indianapolis 500 fans, the majority of which are rednecks. Interview them or a typical Pacer fan (big news as they face the Miami…See More
