HELPING BELIEVERS TO KNOW THEIR BIBLE BETTER: PART 2

Here is a suggestion from Malcolm Hutton: National Secular Society Newsletter, 9 January 2009

"One could take action when a bible is presented in hotel or hospital. First of all go prepared with a yellow highlight pen and ask if the bible is yours to keep. Then highlight some of the most damaging verses, such as –

Luke 14:26 – hate your mother and father
Matthew 10:34/36 – he came not for peace but with a sword
Psalm 137:9 – it will make you happy to dash your little ones against a stone
Leviticus 26:29 – eat the flesh of your sons and daughters
Proverbs 28:25 – if you trust the Lord you will put on weight
Matthew 23:9 – don't call a priest, father
Deuteronomy 19:18/19 – Kill anyone who tells a lie
Exodus 35:2 – Kill anyone who works on Sunday
Leviticus 20:27 – Kill all mediums by stoning
Deuteronomy 21:18/21 – Kill a rebellious son by stoning
Leviticus 24:14/16 – Kill anyone who utters a curse by stoning."

Thousands more could be added to this list.

Part 1 of "Helping believers to know their bible better" was published by Terence on 7 September 2008.

I remember my step dad giving me a good beating bible in hand quoting Deut.21:18/21 and my personal fave spare the rod spoil the child. He often wonders what lead me to "become " an atheist..I tell him you helped create me.

Last week I saw a car in Countrymart parking lot here in Rolla, with a bumper sticker that read, "God is Pro-Life". More evidence that believers don't read the book they claim as the source of their doctrine.

According to Genesis 11:1,'the whole earth had one language and one people. Then human beings built the Tower of Babel that reached into the heavens and made God angry. So he created the different languages and people then scattered them all over the earth so that they would be alienated from each other and would not be able to cooperate.

If anyone is beset by friends or relatives who push the Bible on you, remind them of this story, and that if God is real, he is the one responsible for every war between different nations, cultures or religions that ever existed on earth. Because he was jealous. What a bastard.

Add this one... Judges 11:30-39. A father murders his daughter as a burnt offering. No intervening here as in the case of Abraham.

The sabbath was actually Saturday. For the church to call it Sunday is a blasphemy in itself. I proved this to my mother once when she was still religious (she finally broke free!) and she responded with something about having "A" day is what that god really wants, regardless of what day. I pointed out the many instances where that day was the only day and people died if they didn't think so. It's even in the ten commandments to remember it and keep it holy.

The next argument is that after Jesus came around (if he did), he ended such necessities. However, the bible says that he said that he did not come to end anything. In fact, when questioned about why his disciples were not fasting like they were supposed to, he said it was because he was there, but when he would be gone they would fast again. So, every time a Christian goes shopping on Saturday, they need a stone in the head. Even shopping then is a sin. That was why they had a "preparation day." To buy things and set up before the sabbath.

Thank you Peggy for this additional anecdote about the selective choice of biblical passages as used by the Southern Baptist brainwashers and other thumpers to influence their flock.

I find this topic of extreme interest. Hind sight tells me that in my 'Southern Baptist' youth we were spoon fed the "good parts" of the bible. We were given a little 'devotional booklet' each quarter. On each page was a bible passage and there was a brief commentary that told us what we ought to learn from the passage. If we read that and said a prayer we got to check the 'daily bible reading' block on our offering envelope. So, even in Sunday School, Baptist Training Union, Vacation Bible School, Church Camp and all the other bible study situations we only ever read the stuff they wanted us to read. Anyone care to wager that most 'believers' ' experince of their bible is JUST LIKE MINE?

Ogden,

I could have done that, but why be combative, when my approach worked so well? I out-smarted the bible thumper.

re: taking the lord's name in vain...

I reply as follows:

-he is YOUR lord not mine
-Blasphemy is a victimless crime
-you say he is responsible for everything? then damn him
-It is your hell, YOU go there

A Christian I worked with said "Don't take the lords name in vain" after I said "God damn it." I replied that taking the lords name in vain doesn't mean what he thinks. It means don't take credit for natural events such as floods, lightning, or eclipses. His face wrinkled up, then he said you are probably right about that, but please don't swear. I said OK. After that exchange he treated me less like heathen/infidel and I gained some respect from him.

The scariest thing about Christianity to me is the fact that groups like the Westboro Baptist Church are the most faithful and "word-abiding" by Christianity's own standards.
