I'm a huge fan of Sinead O'Connor, whose music will often veer into religiosity. Also a fan of some christmas music, even tho i haven't celebrated christmas the last few years. :P

One of my favorite CDs is an album by Anonymous 4, called "American Angels." It's a selection of early American a capella sacred music from the Shape Note tradition as well as fuging tunes and those from Virginia and Southern Harmony. I'm also a huge fan of the works of Arvo Part and John Tavener. And, of course, Bach.

The hymns I can do without. I spent most of my life as a closeted gay man in the church, and hymns remind me too much of that period.

Hi! Recovering fundamentalist here. The one thing I truly miss about church aside from the Chicken and Biscuit dinners is the music and singing in a group. I was in the choir. My favorite gospel music is Elvis's "How Great Thou Art"

Luckily enough, many beautiful melodies, when being stripped of any religious text, are not religious when heard with an atheistic detached enjoyment.   Amazing grace is a very good example.  When I hear it on bagpipes, it is not religious, no matter if religious people sometimes add a religious text to it.   I liked it long before I even knew its religious use.   

I am certain, that of the songs and melodies from other countries, which I really enjoy, quite a lot may be religious and I am unaware of it.  

But the kind of songs I heard as a child sung in German churches were in some way dull and unpleasant.   I cannot even remember one melody, that I would want to hear again.

I am a fan of Rachmaninoff’s “All-Night Vigil”.

I consider it one of humanity’s greatest achievements, and simply one of the greatest works of art.

The Estonian Philharmonic’s recording is astounding, and sets the bar for choral performances.  Paul Hillier conducts.
