Exasperated With Defense of Atheism.

I am getting so tired of trying to counter the immense amount of anti-atheism where I live. No matter who well you explain and no matter how well your argument is reasoned the result is always the same.

There is an article in my local paper called - Community guest columnist Tim Lee: Imagining no God means playing God:

For example, I have had to explain about seven times today that just because someone was an atheist and committed numerous atrocities doesn't mean they did it because of their atheism. i have contrasted this against the argument of believers committing atrocities because they were believers. Each person who replies to the letter seems to repeat the same argument and ignore the previous replies.

Just tired of dealing with them.

Napoleon Bonaparte, don't have to hide, mate! We all need to be allowed to show who we are and if someone doesn't accept us the way we are, they don't deserve our friendship...Said, taht, I totally understand what you mean; I'm currently going through a very tough period of my life, and one of the reasons is that I refuse to live in the USA thanks to the far too many bigots that are US citizens/residents and live there...I don't want my children to grow in what I think is a very non tollerant society, especially because I'm an atheist and a communist, I defend the right of minorities, and have no problems whatsoever with other people's sexual preferences (apart from pedophiles, I can't tolerate those)...I'd fear (living there) not for my own life, but for my children. Be brave, all my support from Italy!

Hi Dee, How typical of the religious people not getting informed before giving an opinion! Indeed, if they were ready to read and study, they would most probably become atheist themselves...I'm convinced that from a psychological viewpoit, religious people get really angry when discussing religion with an atheist or non-theist because maybe at inconscious level, deep inside themselves, they know what they believe is simply absurd: their aggressive responses are a reaction to themselves, to avoid realising they've lived and live under the control of the bigger lie in human history.

A friend/neighbour of mine who isn't very bright, hasn't grasped what Atheism is about and what it means to me. I regret very much that she now thinks it's stuff of the devil and thinks I am the devil. It hurt me because I have been kind to her, perhaps condescending. I certainly don't want to be thought of in that way.

I should be cautious and careful with dumb but self righteous, aggressive drunks who are incorrigible. She always calls me so I removed her from my Skype contacts.

An ex-communication for my former friend.

On reflection, I wish I had avoided the whole debacle by being careful, cautious and discreet about my Atheism.

My favorite piece of the article is the jump from the words of a popular song to the idea that all atheist are only living for today.

I read that wonderful article. Author says belief in after life is through deism-false. Theism is the answer. Last two paragraphs utter crap. In rejecting god it does not follow that Isler is substituting himself for god.

@booklover

You sound like a really neat person Dee.  Glad to have talked to you on here.

Thanks. I have my moments. You do, too.

I'm sorry you have to deal with that.  My daughter is Bi and and Atheist.  She belongs to Pride at her University, and has a great set of friends from all different areas of her school.  Friends from Pride, friends from her Sorority ( not a snotty-girl sorority, lol), and friends she met in her dorm.  They all know she is Bi and an Atheist, and they all accept her and she is very close to many of them.  I am SO glad she is having that wonderful experience.  She is into the second semester of her sophomore year.

We are jewish by heritage only of course, and we have talked about how she could go into a KKK meeting and just because of her light skin, light-brown hair, and blue eyes, if she kept quiet, no one would ever know she was 'jewish', Bi-sexual, OR an Atheist.  Not that that scenario would ever happen! lol, just an example of how she is 'allowed' to be safe when there are dangerous, ignorant people around, when many people cannot hide in plain sight.

You sound like a really neat person Dee.  Glad to have talked to you on here.

I do so get that.

I have a triple whammy. I am bi and transgendered and an atheist. I get to be called a pedophile two ways. Bi = pedophile looking for little boys. Transgendered = pedophile looking for little girls.

I totally understand.  Like people who think gay=pedophile? NOT THE SAME THING!  There are just TOO many of the dumb-people.  They can't even get that just because they believe there is a god doesn't mean there is one.  It's just their belief.  I hate that question "Do you believe in god?" That is automatically presuming there is one to believe in.  Seriously.  I say "I don't believe there is one to believe IN!"
