Comment by Prog Rock Girl on August 13, 2011 at 7:56am Avicenna: I know you mentioned this a long time ago, but my understanding of Marinol and other marijuana-substitute drugs is that it actually was more hallucinogenic and less medically helpful than marijuana? I could be wrong about that of course...
Clarence: you mentioned getting eye drops and blacking out when you were born. Do you have a memory of the day you were born?
As someone who has hypothyroid I have to take medicine the rest of my life too. Even if I'm uninsured, it's only $10 for three months and I have no side effects. I know some well-intentioned people who are entirely anti-pill. I challenge them to find me a plant that contains thyroxine and can be consistently measured to give me the right dosage.
Comment by Avicenna on August 13, 2011 at 6:22am Naturopathy does not mean that, and if you want to improve the uptake of metabolic nutrients you administer them via a fast acting route. We do have metabolic issues such as low calcium, low sodium, low glucose, low H2O and many other metabolites which are administered either sub lingually (Place under tongue) or IV.
You cannot physically get faster than per IV since that's injecting metabolite into your body directly. A per IV dose of anything's effect time is measured in seconds. It is best seen in anaphylaxis treatments where a patient goes from dying to breathing in under 15 seconds.
Real medicine has an entire field of metabolic disorders and our allied field of Dietician should not be confused with nutritionist who are quacks. We do specify healthy eating and specific diets for certain people but honestly people don't pay any attention to when we do so.
A lot of medicine is about telling people not to smoke or not to drink excessively or not to drink water after crapping in it or just plain eat right and do some exercise. It's not rocket surgery and I cannot name a single real doctor who says that over eating, cholesterol, excess sugar and so on are healthy ways to live. Obesity is regarded as a medical condition and if you are overweight your doctor will tell you to lose the pounds.
And your cells absorb nutrients just fine, a lot of "naturopathy" forgets that we have survived for nearly 1 million years in this ape format and we don't seem to be falling dead simply because we don't take vitamin pills and supplements. Supplementation exists for poor people (like Cod Liver oil) and those who cannot eat specific diets (Like Ca supplements for the lactose intolerant) not people who are eating balanced diets.
I have seen hyper vitaminosis in people who take supplementations because they don't realise that too much of a good thing, no matter how natural is bad for your health.
The adage in physiology holds true.
The difference between a drug and poison is the dosage.

Comment by Avicenna on August 11, 2011 at 7:34pm You do realise that Dr. Zomboni's procedure was to put stuff into your brain right? The first patient he experimented on was his own wife.
It helped her reduce the symptoms of MS and so is undergoing trials at the moment. He was halted from suggesting that it is a treatment after "1 case" so that people know the mechanism from the ongoing tests.
You cannot simply do such off the prescription procedures without consequences and insurance not to mention the ethics of trying out untested procedures on people. If it works in further testing then everyone will have it. If it doesn't then Dr. Zamboni will have done something very silly.
