When discussing the age of the universe. I sometimes run into the statement "How long is a day". This is an attempt by theists/deists to reconcile the actual age of the universe (13+ billion years) with the 6 days (or 6000 years) in some scriptures.

My first reaction is "You're nuts", but I don't think that would be persuasive. I sometimes try "calling a dog a cat does not change all dogs to cats". But, I am looking for something better. Any suggestions ?

Steve says it better than I could.  If we have to redefine "day" in order for it to fit a fantasy creation story, the the word has no meaning.  It's like an Orwellian re-purposing of existing concepts.  A day is the time between now on July 16th and the same time of day on July 17th.

I understand your frustration but bottom line is that it is just about as useful to argue about this as it is to argue about how many angels would fit on the head of a pin. Which brings to mind your first reaction "You're Nuts!" I know this isn't helpful but neither is the feeling of exhaustion you get from arguing about such nonsense with people determined to hang on to delusions and myths. I always end up thinking "Well I'll never get that hour back".

Say "Loan me a thousand dollars. I'll give it back to you in three days." HA

Unfortunately, I think this weird time idea may have been re-enforced by Carl Sagan's 'Cosmic Calendar'. I saw it on Nova. It was supposed to show dummies the scale of geologic time. I was about 12 or 13, still believed in sky daddy. I saw it and thought "So god's six days was like a billion years, everybody's right." Sagan would have surely scrapped the thing, if he'd been aware of this effect.
