It seems the worst thing you can be is a bisexual polyamorous Atheist. People seem shocked when I or my partner tell them we are in an open relationship. My mom tells me that I need to be careful with my reputation. While discussing swingers in my Social Deviance class, I brought up polyamory because I had told my professor about my beliefs in a discussion, and he felt it would be good to discuss it because the textbook didn't discuss it, and students should know diversity; well, the students made fun of me somehow when the professor gave us a break in class. My sister has called me a slut and hurtful things. So has my mom. She says she can"t trust me because not only am I an Atheist, but that I like sex so I am a disappointment to her.

Those people are wrong.  The best thing that you can be is yourself.  The fact that you are an atheist means you accept reality, while your mom is delusional, at least when it comes to religion.  It's too bad the class is called "Social Deviance" - it should be called "Social Diversity" or something.  Your sister is probably a hypocrite, unless she has never had sex outside marriage.  So are your classmates.

Did she seriously say 'reputation'?  This isn't a small town of 1,000 people, back in the 1950's.

I agree with you all. Well, my sister married her first and only sexual partner.

Thank you. I agree that I am fortunate that my mom didn't let their religion get in the way of still being my mother. Yeah, I know I can't trust my mom very much. She has shown me that many times. Well, I am just fortunate to have the emotional support of my partner. Who always supports me in any of my decisions and has for maybe three plus years. He of course was my first sexual partner but has continually encouraged me to explore my sexuality with whomever I choose. I worried a bit about my reputation at first, but realized the absurdity of double standards of the mostly religious society. My more feminist also nonbeliever friends with whom I related well, told me that in their relationships they decided that as long as they didn't feel like their encounters were more empty than not, they felt good about themselves. I have taken that advice to hear. So, I don't believe in one night stands or meaningless sex. I believe in sex among friends only. My partner is not just my partner, but my best friend. He became my best friend before he became my partner. We became each others' best friend before we became each others' partners.

I think your mom and your sister might not be mature enough to handle your details.  I know I'd never discuss my details with my relatives because I expect the same result.

Keep in mind we live in a world with a lot of repression.  Maybe being totally open in public is a bad idea.  But there's hope because I know lots of people exploring various forms of sexual "deviance" and I think they are all really cool people.  As it becomes more common, the world will slowly gain some maturity on the subject.

War on Christmas in May

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/05/21/texas-merry-christmas-bill_n_3312786.html?utm_hp_ref=politics

i've got no problem with everyone saying "merry christmas" on christmas day.  however, they've turned it into an entire holiday season where it lasts a month or more.  in those situations it should be perfectly acceptable to say "happy holidays" or call it a…

My first funeral as an atheist

Posted by Two Cult Survivor on May 21, 2013 at 11:30am 0 Comments

I posted the bulk of this on another thread, but wanted to add some context separately.

I finally confronted my faith and embraced the fact of my atheism late last August, 2012. Days after I revealed my "epiphany" to a few friends who knew me from another message board, my sister died from Lou Gehrig's Disease (which pissed her off because she hated catching a disease from someone she never f---ed).

THAT was my sister, understand? She was a beautiful, life-loving, potty-mouthed…

Death of a family member

OK. I am venting. My mother died two weeks ago. She was a “god fearing christian.” Before her death she refused all medical treatment. She wanted to be left alone. She even refused to speak with my brother who is a methodist minister. He is a pip, let me tell you! I suspect she did not believe, but a woman born in her time could not and did not state her actual beliefs. This is the opening salvo to all christians; FUCK YOU! I had so many people come and tell…

Unbelievable!!!!!!!!

This probably should not have shocked me as much as it did (especially since I am in Texas). I actually thought my coworkers were playing a joke on me because they know I am an atheist. Sadly, this was no joke. This actually happened.

I work in a psychiatric hospital. The doctors who admit patients are general MDs. (Psychiatrists see patients after admission) Yesterday evening we received several calls from irate parents. A new doctor who was doing admissions yesterday actually…
