I say sacrifice all necessary life for progress. Let that be our greatest good, instead of the preservation of life. Then at least we might get to some type of existence that we can tolerate spending a lifetime in.

I rented a recent Werner Herzog movie called My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done. Which in itself was a pretty great movie. In the extras there was a short film called Plastic Bag, which he narrates. An incredibly surprising and creative story about a used plastic bag. The closing line reflects both our thoughts on the topic of death, and the rejection of the sempiternal search for the fountain of youth, that atheists are just as attached to as the religious, which never ends baffling me:

I still have hope that I will meet her again, and if I do, I would tell her just one thing: "I wish you had created me so that I could die."

Birth and death are but the bookends of our human experience, and the more we fight death, the more disease and illness comes to define our lives.
