I was once a very active and committed Christian. I was the church treasurer, served on multiple committees, was a choir member and was active with the youth group. But I always had a science bug, even in high school. Yet I had never tried to reconcile my faith with science. I don't know if I deliberately avoided it or just never thought of it, but that doesn't really matter now. One evening while reading 'The Elegant Universe by Brian Greene, I began to think - I wonder how well my faith… Continue

Right I am experiencing a very depressing time in my life. Once upon a time I would look to religion to try and make sense of my circumstances. But know I realize how patronizing and empty those interactions were and I realize I am the one who must overcome these feelings. I am in the midst of applying for disability via Social Security and the hoops I must jump through seem never ending, with no end in sight. I have been waiting months to get an appointment with a pain management doctor… Continue

I just watched a show on the National Geographic channel called 'Nazi Scrapbooks from Hell'. It is one of the saddest things I have ever seen in my entire life. The scale of the Holocaust and the banality of evil were driven home like nothing I have witnessed. My father was a WWII vet who fought in the North Atlantic and South Pacific theaters. Just when I think I understand WWII something like this comes along and lets me know that I do not really understand it at all. And there are still… Continue

Pardon me while I go into rant mode for a minute or two...
While I am a live and let live kind of guy, I am sick and tired of people trying to save my non-existent soul. Look - if you want to believe in a sky fairy who monitors your every action and passes judgment on your every thought - fine - I did my share of hallucinogens back in the day. But please stop trying to pass that sh*t off on me. The last time I checked the Constitution, it guarantees you the right to believe whatever… Continue

I am going to brag a little on my son here so please excuse the excess of fatherly pride. A little background first - my son is playing 7th grade football this year for his middle school. He is 12 y/o, 5' 10" tall and weighs in at 224 ibs. He plays defensive tackle and this clip is from their jamboree last Saturday...watch it HERE
He made the highlight reel first game -… Continue

The catholic asshats are out in force at Pharyngula - they are posting massive comments 40K+ words of pope drivel in an attempt to crash the Science Blogs servers. It's time for a little activism folks - these are deliberate attacks on the SB servers. Support Professor Myers and the First Amendment. I have been following the comment thread over at http://de-conversion.com/2008/07/22/i-never-wanted-to-be-an-atheist/ - and ran across the following exchange (names have been deleted to protect the guilty):

Wow, the tone here is so interesting. Such great anger and pompousness, against God himself, even. Hmmm. He is not going to accept any of your excuses on Judgment Day. He is going to show you all of the ways he revealed himself to you quite… Continue

Recently Sam Harris conducted an online survey about belief. He asked that responders to the surveys (4) be either atheists or Christian. The results are fairly predictable - but a few surprises. You can see the results here:

Fos those who may NOT know (jeez - you people really exist?) Cthulhu is an invention of H.P. Lovecraft in his many stories of the Elder Gods. Cthulhu was the prophet/preacher for the 'Old Ones' or may have been and Elder God himself. He is described in 'The Call of Cthulhu' as " a monster of vaguely anthropoid outline, but with an octopus-like head whose face was a mass of feelers, a scaly, rubbery-looking body, prodigious claws on hind and fore feet, and long, narrow wings behind." How cool is… Continue

If god is omniscient he knows everything, including my disbelief. If god is immutable the he cannot change his mind. So why would a Christian pray in the first place, especially for a heathen like me? If god has these attributes – he can’t change his mind about anything. This is also where the Bible contradicts the very nature of the god who inspired it. So message to the Christians – no thanks on the prayer thing.
