How Not to Become a Lapsed Christian Like Me

Today I went through a huge mess of old papers and found a lot of things that I wrote in the past. This prompted me to drag out my out journals and diaries. This was the earliest entry I found in which I clearly expressed that I was no longer a believer. At the time I was still living with my fundamentalist baptist family and struggling with the uncertainty of my future.

In need of a friend of the lesbian variety.

This is kind of weird but I could use a new online friend. My meatspace life is ... well I'm stuck with online frins for now. I've actually literally never had a gay friend and for some reason lately I just feel like it would be really nice just to chat with, well, another lesbian. Not about anything in particular and I"m not looking for romance. Anyway, just putting it out there to see if anyone is up for it.

Spanking

I was raised this way and I promise you it is abuse even though most of the parents who spank do it "with love". A lot of people who are raised being spanked raise their own children this way as well and think it's a perfect method but for a more sensitive child like myself it is traumatic. I remember being terrified and having panic attacks and hyperventilating. I felt terrible even when my siblings were spanked and would sometimes cry when I heard them screaming in the other room. Even now my… Continue

Don't tell your kids they have genitals and maybe they won't figure it out.

A church near where I live is picking up on the trend and preaching about sex. The church sign reads something like "Sex God's Way". (Don't remember exact wording.)

Where do I start? The beginning? I would say by the age of six and increasingly as I grew I was taught about modesty. To cover my knees, never wear anything tight, and feel extremely awkward in a bathing suit. I was not allowed to wear shorts or pants and by the time I reached puberty I felt exposed in a sleeveless shirt. Why?… Continue

Battlefield of the Mind

My grandma gave me this Christian book today. (I spare her the knowledge that I'm an atheist. She wouldn't be able to handle it.) She likes Joyce Meyer. Some of you who have been Christians may recognize her name.

My first thought was that the title by itself says a lot about the mentality. I know that I battled fruitlessly 24 hours a day when I was a Christian and now I have peace with myself and my thoughts. I of course sometimes feel confused and now and then attempt to adjust my… Continue

Article: Personal story of a woman who left the Patriarchy/Quiverfull movement

All God's children

By Kathryn Joyce

"Accepting every pregnancy as a unilateral blessing meant some radical leaps of faith, however. Put into physical practice, Garrison says the lesson of leaders like Nancy Campbell, editor of the fundamentalist women's magazine Above Rubies and author of movement books like "Be Fruitful and Multiply," "was, if pregnancy can kill you, think of the… Continue

Convention on the Rights of the Child

This morning at work the news was on. Annoyingly on Fox News. I don't know what that woman's name is that comes on in the morning but i can't stand her ... I won't rant about her right now. Anyway she declared that the evil childrens' rights treaty which was accepted by everyone but the US and one other horrid country will keep people from teaching their kids religion, spanking, and giving time outs. These things were actually listed in text. She repeatedly said "some people in Geneva will get… Continue

Family

My problem seems to be that I'm poor and perpetually on the verge of homelessness or facing hunger. When I wasn't speaking to my family for three years I fell into a dysfunctional relationship with my wife's mother and aunt. They both gave generously to us in order to keep our heads above water. Their caring was genuine and I loved them both but at the same time that they loved us they judged us for being gay. This is a strange thing that I encounter often from Christians. I couldn't speak up… Continue

Meet the parents

No big deal really, my brother has his new girlfriend over to my parents house for lunch. Nothing that anyone even really gets excited about. But immediately I'm upset again because for the hundredth time I'm watching one of my siblings enjoy normal, inclusive treatment from our parents that I'm not given. For me, it's enough to cry over. It's enough to make me blow off lunch and go hungry instead. Part of me asks, should I be upset? Am I overreacting? But wouldn't anyone feel the same… Continue

The Past

I decided to write this in order to draw attention to the damage that religion can cause to children. At the same time I want to say that my parents love me very much and have never done anything selfishly or to hurt me. Throughout my lifetime they have demonstrated that they would sacrifice endlessly to supply my needs and work towards my happiness. They are simply ignorant people who have always done what they thought was right.

Not two days ago I saw one of the children that used… Continue

Equality U - The Christian Gays

http://www.logoonline.com/video/?id=1602603&vid=331075

A bus load of Christian gay people ... yes I said Christian gay people ... tour the country protesting at Christian colleges that discriminate against their gay students.

I just watched this movie and some parts of it were heartrendingly moving. It's really hard for me to watch things about cruelty to gay people. (To any people really but with… Continue

Respect

Growing up, my fundamentalist parents tried to teach a lot of wacky "values" that just didn't make sense to me. Let's start with patriotism. I feel lost trying to understand this concept. Even as a small child I didn't see what was good about that. I understand being concerned about the community/country you live in but ... I don't love my country. It's just the place I happen to have been born. I'd rather think of myself as a citizen of the world. I think if more people thought that way… Continue

Aristotle explained

It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it.

- Aristotle

My last post contained this quote and I thought I'd explain why I liked it. It reminds me of the way religious people censor their lives so that no contradicting ideas cause them to doubt. It was one of the things that bothered me most growing up. I was very curious about everything and was frustrated repeatedly by my parents taking books out of my hands and telling me they were of… Continue
