I got my own back on some "god feathers" today.
A man and his son arrived on my doorstep. When I opened the door the man started to talk about the signs we have on the window next to the door. They read "Welcome to the House of Perpetual Commotion" and "Everyone here seems normal until you get to know them".
Recognizing foot-in-the-door sales patter, I smiled and asked bluntly "What is it that you want?"
"We've come here to talk about the Bible", said the man. I replied, "Oh, I've got somethi…

Jacob, our humble expert in biological sciences, seems to be rather reluctant to address the issues brought up in response to his second posting. Here is what he came up with.

To sum up ALL OF THIS…….
‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’

My Stumble Upon button sometimes gets me into forums where I cannot resist taking on the locals who demonstrate less than stellar thinking, especially when it is related to god belief. Here is a recent example from the Nofunnybusiness web site.

THE PRACTICE OF VILIFYING THE VICTIM OF FAITH
Both religions and mental illness can give rise to bizzarre and ludicrous beliefs. When the practice of religious beliefs causes horrific events many people, especially those who also believe in the same religion, are quick to label the credulous believer as mentally ill. This shields the True Believer from examining the credibility of their beliefs.
Muslims who kill themselves by flying planes into buildings in countries full of Christians are app…

The basis for an Australian charter of human rights.
Submissions like the one from the Evangelical Presbyterian Church of Australia provide a vivid example of why Australia needs a charter of human rights which is based on mature forms of moral reasoning rather than self-preserving ideologies.
The Evangelical Presbyterian Church of Australia argues that their unique form of Christianity should be forced on all Australians because
1. Australia was founded as a Christian Nation
2. Mor…

Absolute truth, not limited truth, is a necessary component of many religions.
Christians frequently insist that God is Love. What they generally mean is that their particular version of god is always loving in every conceivable situation towards every conceivable person. Unless he gets righteously angry, of course.
The problem with this mindless assertion is that is is inconsistent with reality and with the rest of the standard Christian story. Leaving aside the difficulties o…

I often hear from theists that they could never become an atheist because they are afraid that they would have no purpose and meaning to their lives.
While I was a dedicated Christian I do not recall what was so meaningful and purposeful about my life during this stage. Nor do I recall why I feared that these feelings would dissipate if I ever lost my faith. The reality, if my memory is not too distorted, is that this part of my life was not particularly happy or especially meaningful. All I ca…

The Jewish-Christian divinity is depicted as rabidly homophobic in the pages of the Old Testament, in the annuls of the Vatican and in the sermons of many Christian hot heads. What can we make of this in the light of modern psychological research?
We are told in the Hebrew book of Genesis that Yahweh (or El) made man in his own image. I guess that means that this god, like his earthly son, comes with male sexual organs attached. We don't know much about what the Almighty Father does with his. W…

The story begins with Adam and Eve wandering happily around the garden without a stitch of clothing, just like small children. In spite of their nakedness they unashamedly chat with the Big Daddy Yahweh whenever he chooses to visit. They are blissfully unaware of the difference between good and evil so they do not realize that nakedness is immoral. Like children, they don’t have any responsibilities. There is no need to work because the garden is full of food that can simply be plucked off trees…

Part of the doctrine of most branches of evangelical Christianity is that it is important to convert others to the belief in order to save their eternal souls. This involves influencing others in order to sell the system.
If you want to sell an idea to someone it helps to know your audience. Going into a discussion with a set of false notions about the beliefs and values of those you are talking to just makes you sound ridiculous. You need to understand what the real issues are, not just the on…

When a Christian decided to go soul fishing on the Unreasonable Faith site recently, his ignorance of the reality of non-belief and non-believers tripped him up.
Most Religionists are incredibly ignorant of what it means to be a non-believer. Fundamentalists of any brand are among the most naive in this respect. The gross inadequacy of their primary assumptions about the causes and characteristics of atheism is one of the reasons why attempts to reconvert the disillusioned faithful meets with a…

An atheist blogger recently outlined her experience as a commuting prisoner of a loud-mouther Bible Banger. http://www.atheistnexus.org/profiles/blogs/jesus-had-followers-not
It made me think about what I could do to counter such an anti-social attack. Perhaps a humorous counter attack might work.
I am thinking of preparing a mini book of not-so-nice Bible quotes which I carry with me at all times in preparation for a similar attack. Then with a loud voice I can cry to the masses as follows:…

Religious door-knockers, button-holers and junk mailers engender a range of emotions in their victims which are almost entirely negative. The range includes amusement, boredom, irritation, frustration, anger, and even rage. While others identify the behavior as rude, religious zealots and fundamentalists who engage in “witnessing behavior” appear to be ignorant of several generally accepted social rules.
Extended or repeated "declarations of faith" are considered acceptable if they are projecte…

Friendships with Fundies can be very taxing.
When I began my friendship with “Frieda” we were both members of an Australian Methodist church. I began studying for the Methodist ministry but the intensive academic study of the Bible led to me losing my religious beliefs. Shortly after that Frieda moved to a country town. The ensuing 20 year relationship has been continued, for the most part, by email.
When the Methodist Church joined to become part of the Uniting Church, Frieda joined a charism…

A pivotal change in history was made in the USA today. A man of mixed race and skin color has been elected as President.
In his inaugural speech the new President acknowledged not only the racial mix of the nation, but the religious mix as well. This included reference to the presence of citizens with no religious beliefs.
In this inauguration the racial mix of the US Nation was acknowledged and peoples of various racial lines and mixtures were given pride of place and permitted to engage full…

So say the texts which Jews and Christians consider holy.
When you make something in your image you make it look like you, right? This would mean that the Jewish God responsible for the creation of man looks exactly like an ancient Jewish male.
This might need a little modification since there is some dispute over whether the creation god was Yahweh, El, a committee of Elohim gods or some combination of these. There is also the question of whether the responsible god was Canaanite before conve…

A recent entry in his Blog is not only funny in its own right but has resulted in a lengthy and highly hilarious interchange among blog followers.

Unless you live in China you will almost certainly have been subjected to one or more simpering viral emails usually attributing a set of positive or magical characteristics to the christian god. Instead of just being irritated by them I though it might be constructive to rearrange them and send them back into the system.
I received one about math magic as a New Year's greeting from a friend. It was presented in Power Point. I do not have Power Point installed on my system so I took screen copi…
