What the Pope Wears

There may be much to complain about the Catholic Church, and also the Pope, but can people please stop using phrases like "men who wear dresses" or "a man who wears a dress" in their ridicule of the clergy?

What is the point of such an insult? To emasculate the clerics? To laugh at men who do not wear 'male' clothing? I find such ridicule to be rather offensive, not because I have any particular care for clerics, but because the ridicule is misogynistic. It does nothing but… Continue

Critiquing the RCC is reminiscent of Anti-Semitism?

The Roman Catholic Church has, the reader may well be aware, found itself in a bit of a bother. The Church has discovered, much to its chagrin, that covering up sexual assaults against children is not the done thing. More so when those clergy known to engage in such acts are shunted around from parish to parish, only to continue in such acts.

Rightfully, the Church has been much criticised for this approach of the past many decades. Finally forced to acknowledge the practice, rather… Continue

Atheist Con, Friday Night

Back home from the first session of the Atheist Convention that's going on in Melbourne this weekend.

On the bill tonight was Sue-Ann Post, Mark Tier, and Catherine Deveny.

Sue-Anne presented some comedic commentary on Mormonism (there are three levels to Mormon heaven, and the top level gets one the opportunity to become a god and create one's own planet of… Continue

Religious Discrimination?

In 1998 Alicia Pedreira was fired from her job as a Family Specialist at Spring Meadows Children's Home by Kentuky Baptist Home for Children (KBHC) after discovering that she was lesbian. KBHC said that her dismissal was "because her admitted homosexual lifestyle is contrary to Kentucky Baptist Homes for Children core values." Pedreira then sued KBHC, alleging… Continue

President Kennedy speeking about religion in government

John F. Kennedy, 35th President of the United States, faced opposition during his campaign for the Presidency from many Protestant sections of the US community because of his Catholicism. No President before him (or indeed since) was a Catholic, and there was concern about the role and Authority of the Papacy over Catholics worldwide, and how this would affect decisions made by JFK if he were to secure the Office of President. Specifically, could the Pope direct Kennedy to make decisions… Continue

The Choice That Never Was

That Bristol Palin, US Vice-Presidential Republican Candidate Sarah Palin's 17 year old daughter, is pregnant (and, golly gosh!, unwed) is no secret. It's been out there in medialand for all to read and hear about. The Republicans have been telling the media to keep out of this private family business, and that's a fair enough request. After all, Bristol's pregnancy really does have nothing to do with her mother's ability to fulfill the duties of the office of Vice-President of the United… Continue

Torture and McCain

Though the present US Administration declares that the US does not engage in torture, it is pretty obvious that treatment of people imprisoned at Guantanamo Bay and elsewhere is torture.

I've been listening to some of the speeches at the Republican National Congress. One thing I have noticed in these speeches is reference to Senator McCain's experience as a POW in Viet Nam and the torture he endured. Speaking of this experience, Rudy Giuliani makes the following… Continue
